New to tudiabetes but not diabetes

Hullo from Northern California!

I was told I had T2 on World Diabetes Day in 2008! It would have been months earlier but my PCP was in denial (he kept telling me that my frequent trips to bathroom and thirst were due to "Aging". But aging did not explain the fatigue, dry mouth, and dry heaves days before my blood test. I should have listened to my HMO's Advice nurses! *grin*).

I was Dx with a whopping A1c of 11.2, but managed (with oral meds and diet and exercise) to get it down into the 5s. Then life got more stressful and my A1c started climbing, with the highest being last March at 10.1. 2011 has been an extremely difficult year with my brother adjusting to be disabled after his accident and my breaking my first bone -- my leg -- in March.

This week's A1c was 7.7 so it is headed in the right direction. My next goal is 6.0.

Welcome shirehobbit. You will find many friends here. Kinda frustrating having a high A1C, but have been there myself. After a while under treatment you will get it down into the 6's. Of course, any injury will create stress and cause your BS to rise. You did not mention what your current therapy is and that's what folks want to know to comfort you. That's up to you if you want to tell folks in here. That's OK. There are a lot of ears to listen to you. Once step at a time. Happy Holidays.

Hi Mike!

My current diabetes treatment is metformin & glipizide, and diet. Once I add exercise back into the mix I'll be able to get my BS levels where I want them and thus be able to go off the oral meds (I did it before, and I can do it again).

I'm currently visiting family for Christmas. When I return home next week I will also return to the gym for regular exercise sessions (this will help lower my BS and strengthen my leg). I did physical therapy sessions at my HMO's facility which gave me back my range of motion (I had a Tibial Plateau Fracture), but I've been dragging my feet about returning to the gym because I've gained bodyfat and lost muscle mass.

I'm a foodie, and what I hate about diabetes is that my body doesn't do well with grains (any type of grain) and potatoes. I miss being able to eat anything without first thinking about what it will do to my blood sugar. And it is not fair that even whole grains and steel cut oatmeal spike my blood sugar. Hey, we're not talking about junk here!
