Hi…I gave up Medtronic when I could no longer stand being tethered to a pump and moved to pods, which I love. I have been in the Omnipod 5 pivotal study and why I like the device, I don’t think the algo likes me as much as it should. I hear and have seen great things about the CIQ but I don’t know if I can go back to being tubed. Any of you experience something similar? How did u deal with it?
You don’t have to compromise. Tandem’s product to compete with Omnipod should hit the shelves early 2022. It was supposed to be out this summer… but Covid.
It’s working name through product development has been T:sport. It might change when it comes to market, but I doubt it. There’s just been too much T:sport talk. It’s going to be half the size of the T:slim X2 (which is already the smallest pump… Including Omnipod), because it won’t have a screen and has a reduced capacity of 200-units. It will be completely controlled by your cell phone. No need to carry a PDM. It’s going to be equipped with the latest version of Control-IQ. You won’t even be tied to your phone, though, because all the brains are on the pump itself and there’s a quick-bolus button directly on the pump. You just can’t view/modify anything without the phone.
Because of the small size, there’s going to be new carry options. It can be stuck right to you with adhesive, worn around your neck on a lanyard, or clipped to you like most current pumpers do.
Unlike Omnipod, though, though don’t chuck it in the trash after 3 days. It’s durable medical equipment. Therefore, it’s not 100% tubeless. They’re going to offer 4-inch, tiny tubing options. I think this is a good thing, though, because you’re not stuck with Omnipod’s one-size-fits-all cannula option. You can choose whatever size/material/angle/insertion mechanism works best for you.
I’ve been following T:sport stuff obsessively because I’m down to my last month of warranty on my T:slim X2, and I’m really interested in signing up for the t:sport. I LOVE my current pump, but you kinda want something new and shiny when you sign up for another 4 years. My plan is to try and run out of warranty until the T:sport comes along. I at least want to see the final form factor before I make the decision.
What are the bolus options on the quick-bolus button for the current Tandem pumps? I thought it was something like 1 unit, or something close to those amounts, right? Like you can’t give a 0.1 unit bolus or anything smaller?
Would be interested in hearing what the quick-bolus options are for the new T:sport.
It can be set for units or carbs (grams) to increment for each press.
For units, options for .5, 1, 2, 5 units per press
For carbs, options for 2, 5, 10, 15 grams per press
Each time you press button, it increments based on setting above. When stop pressing, it delivers total press amount.
I use setting .5 units, so 3 presses to get 1.5 units, similar to what I used on minimed pump.
I’m like @MM1 , and use the 0.5 units per press option. It’s just easiest for me.
If you’re someone who is very sensitive to insulin, you’d have to go the counting carbs route… In which case it would use your programmed I:carb setting to calculate those small amounts. The smallest the T:slim will bolus be is 0.05 units… So yes, you can deliver a 0.1 unit bolus via quick-bolus. Which honestly, I can’t even fathom needing that little.
Pumps really aren’t designed to deliver accurately/safely for the extremely insulin-sensitive. There’s always a margin of error. Someone who consistently needs so little insulin that these minimums are yet still too high is already flying dangerously and should really be using diluted insulin, anyway.
So it seems that the way to do a very small bolus, like 0.1 units would be to just setup my carb ratio so that 1 press equals that small amount… Thanks!
My interest in that would be for sports. During exercise, 0.1 units is a lot.
That’s a total fair point. It’s the people complaining about the 0.05 basal lower limit and similar that I worry about. If you’re unhappy with the lower limits of a system, then the system is simply not designed for your extreme needs. But a 0.1 unit bolus is well-within it’s capabilities.
Diluted insulin may be alternative.
I’m wanting the tsport. It seems like the perfect hybrid.
I tried in a dummy one a year ago, just to feel the weight.
I stuck it to my upper arm. It’s heavier than a pod. But much smaller than a regular pump.
It has a infusion set that attaches with in 2 inches of it.
I’m only 1 year into my tandem, they told me I could switch it out when it’s released for a fee. No clue what that fee is tho.
There is a new algorithm comin out soon too. I really hope it fixes some of the current issues, like having ability to set my own target glucose.
@Robyn_H Awesome. I was tracking the t:sport and was thinking it might be Omnipod competitive but didn’t know for sure. You mention a “signup” - -what is that? If so, I’d like to do the same. Is there a beta program?
No, sorry. There were clinical trials that you could’ve possibly registered for over at clinical trials.gov , but I’m afraid my choice of words were confusing and I don’t think they’re recruiting anymore. They’re redesigning the interface because the trial participants had some complaints, but I don’t think it’s being done in any way that would require new trials.
I simply meant that I’m really excited for this one, and would like to choose it for my next pump. At least I think so. Those interface complaints have me a little concerned. Most of the trial patricians I’ve heard from actually said they were happy to go back to their T:slim X2. But they didn’t have the cell phone interface for the trials (that’s a separate FDA submission) and Tandem is working to correct the other concerns… So hopefully the system will be as sexy as I anticipate it to be upon release! Though, I’m a complete technophile, so my definition of sexy may stray from the norm.
Same here. From all of my research, this is where I keep landing. Thanks again!
Robyn,
Thanks so much for this sneak preview. I’m ready for Control-IQ but have an aversion to long tubing. It’s great to hear about this!
