PDM not turning on

I’ve never had a problem with my PDM until last night. I took it out to bolus, and it wouldn’t turn on. I pulled out the batteries, switched them around, and it worked. The on-screen battery meter tells me they were half full; I typically wait until my PDM starts yelling at me that the batteries are low before changing them. I estimate I had at least a couple weeks left on this pair.

It worked well for the rest of the night, then this morning, it happened again, this time after I had typed in the # of carbs to bolus and pressed confirm. It just died. This time, I changed the batteries to brand new ones.

If this keeps up, I’ll be calling Insulet, but wanted to check and see if anyone else had ever had this happen. I’ve been on the pod for almost 2 years, and this is the first time I’ve seen this kind of behavior.

Yes, I had this happen to me, and it took a bit to get it turned back on, which concerned me. (I was taking my kids camping by myself, and didn’t want to have to tell the 5 and 7 year old that we needed to drive back home, because my back-up pods were not going to be of any use) I called insulet, and they replaced the PDA, I didn’t want to wait until the time that it maybe wouldn’t turn back on.

Never had that issue; however, mine will sometimes “reboot” all by itself. A couple of weeks ago it was sitting on my desk at work I saw it go dark out of the corner of my eye, picked it up and it had already started the reboot. Came up immediately and all was well. This is about the third time I’ve seen it in 4 months. Batteries have indicated a variety of usage.

Never had this problem but I would definitely NOT wait until it happens again. Call them now and let them know.

Didn’t have the problem with mine not turning on but did have the same issues as Ron and it would re-boot at times and did it at a bolus and I was having problems with pods going into a steady error alarm. I also notice that it was really touchy to the point I would set it down on the counter for fear of it re-booting. Insulet told me there may be a loose connection to the battery terminals or to try Energizer Max batteries. They told me to check if I have a bad connection if the pdm would shut off if you shook it back and forth and mine did not. I switched to the Energizer batteries and I have not had a problem since then and no pod errors either, cant’ believe the brand of battery makes that much difference. I think I was using Rayovac at the time as I got a deal on large pack but had nothing but problems, might be a possibility in our situation. I try that if first and if it does it again I’d immediately call insulet

Ron…those were the same problems I was having and by switching battery brands to Energizer max I have not had that problem since…might be worth a try if you aren’t already using them.

A social-networking friend had issues with her son’s PDA…she had to change batteries MANY times in a relatively short period of time. Insulet is replacing it for her.

As Schmutz brings up, If yours is the 2nd gen PDM, it might be the battery type…most brands are a tiny bit too short. Research past discussions. There was a lot of talk about this a while back. Good luck.

This is our experience too. If you take them out and pop them right back it, it seems to resolve the problem.

I have found that putting a text strip in will turn it on when the buttons do not, as a temporary workaround. I have had 2 replacement pdms for this problem in the 8 months I have been on the pod. I love the system, but it is disconcerting to have this problem reappear.

I had this exact same thing happen to me on Wednesday for the first time. Each time I went to use my pod, it wouldn’t turn on. I would take out one battery, put it back in, and it would turn on. I believe the issue was that when replaced the batteries the night before, they may have been old or partially used. I always use brand new batteries except… this last time when my batteries needed to be changed I realized I was out of batteries, so I searched around and found a couple of batteries that were laying around. IAnyway, after the pod not turning on, I went to the store and bought a new supply of batteries and again replaced the ‘used’ batteries in the pod, and I haven’t had any issues since.

I’ve had this issue twice. Both times using Duracell. Both times I had put a strip into a powered down PDM and got nothing. Both times I “fixed” it by taking out the batteries and putting them back in. The batteries still had at least a half bar of life in them.

I just called Insulet. The rep said using Duracell “may be the problem” and he recommended I switch to Engergizer Max. If anything, he has my call logged in the system in case I have further issues after switching to the Energizer Max batteries.
