Most of the time, around bed time, im hungary so my mom says I can have a spoonful of plain peanut butter and a few nuts. Im concerned that they are the reason that my BG goes up sometimes. Lets say i have exactly a tablespoon of plain peanut butter and 10 casews, do you think that has enough carbs to effect anything? Remember, Im still trying to get stable with my BG and im not on the pump yet. I will have that amount of peanut butter and casews before I go to bed extra if im hungary. Sometimes when my mom checks my BG at 3am im either high (230ish) or low (60ish). I find that when I have the extra “no carb” snack my BG is higher but not ALL the time. This might sound confuzing to you but if you follow it can you please help me out, thanks!
peanut butter is godly to me hahaha where i am vegetarian i crave it so often… i just hate the effects it puts on my blood sugar ugh its horrible, especially hours after i eat it. tricky stuff it is.
Does it raise your BG a lot? It is a tricky thing to eat, lol I know.
Nicolette…I eat a lot of nuts and have finally figured out I need to bolus for them. The carb count is pretty low, I suspect for me it is the fat. That would definitely apply to peanut butter. Do you notice the same effect with cheese?
no, not with cheese, I can eat literally as much cheese as i want and nothing happens. I wish I was on the pump right now because then I could just give myself insulin when I want nuts or peanut butter. What pump do you use?
ohh, I heard that they are high in Fiber also. Tonight Im only having a few anyways
For me the fat seems to make more of an impact than the fiber. Nicolette, I am on the Omnipod and it is true you can just dose whenever you want to eat but I did that with my pen also. You still must try and wait 15 to 20 minutes before you eat and if sometimes you have high #'s regardless of bolusing for the carbs as with nuts or when hormones are taking over.
I happen to have really creamy peanut butter but if im only having a tablespoon of it, will i need to count the carbs of it??
My peanut butter is approx 11.2% carb - not low enough to consider it a ‘free food’. However I never jab for it because I have so little.
So… check your peanut butter jar - it may have something added that increases the carb count. (mine is only peanuts, oil and salt)
Also check how much you’re having. According to my jar, 3 teaspoons is approx 15g peanut butter (1.7g carb and 1.1g fibre.) so my measly 1 - 2 teaspoons is nothing, but if you’re having more it could add up.
Peanut butter is very high in fat - this one here is 52% fat. If there’s not much in the way of carbs, your body will use fat to make glucose. It’s a long slow process so you’re less likely to notice a BG high in the hour or two after eating it, but more likely a slow increase in the following hours. If you’ve eaten a fair amount of carb during the day then your body doesn’t bother as much with fats (so I’m told). However fats still delay BG rises and still (I think) to some degree turn into glucose.
Have I just made things more confusing?! Hopefully something made sense there!
