Peanut Butter- Freind or Foe?
What do you think?
I eat between 52-60 grams of natural peanut butter with breakfast every day. I have a tendency to lose weight and peanut butter has been a great friend in the struggle to keep my weight up.
Maurie
my mother (T2 for 25 years; shots for last 15 years), always takes it with her (on wholemeal) for outings…in case of unexpected delays…and so has a quick & healthy snack to combat any hypo issues when she is out of the house.
I don’t care at all for peanut butter but I love all other nut butters including macadamia, cashew, almond and hazlenut. I love it too much and it is actually the only food I currently eat that I have to be vigilent not to overdue. I have a very mixed response to it but the short version is Blood sugar: Good. Weight: Not so good!
I eat nut butter with a 1/2 of a Guatamalan banana (different flavor than the ones we are used to in the U.S.). I have been bolusing for the 1/2 banana and 5 T of nut butter according to the jar, but my idea of a “measured” tablespoon is more like two.And I am always low! So I am convinced that the nut butter doesn’t really have that many carbs, or somehow I process them very well because they are so high protein and or fat. No idea really! What’s odd is when I look on calorieking.com it doesn’t list nut butter (peanut is the only one listed) as having an carbs at all! Strange! I just know I can bolus for a lot less carbs than the jar says.
All good. Nope. I’m a post-menapausal woman and am at a good weight but have gained 7 pounds in the last 2 years which freaks me out. I eat a lot of fat like the nut butter and tons of cheese. So I think I need to cut back as I really don’t want to gain another pound. Maurie’s great friend is my enemy…though a much loved enemy! Strong stuff nut butter vis a vis carbs. Maurie, do you bolus for the carbs as it says on the jar?
Peanut butter! Mmmmmm!
I frequently have a PB sandwich for lunch. The PB is fine for my blood sugar, but you have to watch out for what you eat it with. Two slices of break, for instance, is 30 gram of carbs.

I love peanut butter but a few months ago, I started having problems with it and I can’t eat it anymore – I feel like someone stabbed me in the heart.
Before I had to quit recently, I always had it every day – I would take a peanut butter sandwich to work for lunch. One day they were ordering pizza for lunch and asked if I wanted to go in on it with them. When I said yes, the guy ordering was surprised and said, “you know they don’t put peanut butter on pizza.”
When I started having problems with gastroparesis, I started eating more of it because it is an easy to digest food – I was actually having some with breakfast, lunch & dinner. Maybe I ate too much & that is why I can’t eat it anymore!
I think it’s my friend in little bits. LOL! I really don’t just sit down with the jar but sometimes I eat it and sometimes I don’t just depending on my mood. The most I’ve ever sit down and ate was 3 ts full. I don’t do sandwitches or crackers with it though just a ts of pb and I’m off.
I have pb and jelly on one slice of oatbran toast every morning, and I CANNOT STOP, then yesterday at work we had a wellness screening success story emailed to the whole company and of course he said how bad pb is for you, and now I am starting to think, it just may not be the way to go if trying to lose weight.
But it is low carb and if you watch total calories, it is a small meal but worth it!
I’m interested in what kind of peanut butter everyone eats. I usually get Skippy Natural but I’m wondering if there are any good tasting, lower carb brands out there.
lower carb does not always mean healthier, I eat Jif (normal kind)
Yes you’re right, I meant to say without added sugar.
Peanut butter! Mmmmmm!
I have Kraft smooth pb on one slice of bread sometimes during the day or a tbs. of pb anytime. If I didn’t have Kraft pb, my pb addicted Daughter would faint. PB doesn’t bother me any. The bread, I need a bit of Insulin.
Hello, my name is Susy and I am addicted to Jif Creamy Peanut Butter… LOL… I LOVE IT!! I have it everyday and it doesn’t affect my bs at all. I can only eat it on one peice of toast. (two puts me way high), or on an apple or banana… I totally love it… And there is cinnamon in it too which lowers bs.
Friend and near daily companion, but I do bolus for it per the label.
I ea it 3 times a week with trader joes rice cakes or with Ezekiel bread. I dont eat the skippy or those type of brand peanut butter. I will eat the trader joes almond butter or a rand that doesnt include all that added stuff skippy has. Thats just me lol
Skippy Natural actually only has peanuts, sugar, palm oil, and salt. So not too bad, but I’ll have to check out trader joes next time I go.
I love peanut butter! I buy Trader Joe’s organic creamy pb (made with Valencia peanuts, the best!). It only has peanuts and salt. I even have a peanut butter cookbook, “The Ultimate Peanut Butter Book” by Bruce Weinstein & Mark Scarbrough. Now that is dedication to peanut butter. A low carb ultimate dessert is bittersweet chocolate scooped in peanut butter. You guys are making me hungry…
Trader Joes organic PB on half an apple is often breakfast and /or lunch for me. I love peanut butter!
I switched from lunchmeat to peanut butter for the last couple of weeks and it seems to be fairly pleasant. Not quite as tasty but I feel a healthier glow?
