Playing in the Garden!

This weekend has been full of projects and fun. I have fixed up some things on my house, am planning to buy the trim for my living room, and ACTUALLY did my dishes!!

I have new trees that are growing up in pots. I planted a long row of hostas in my back yard. They are lovely. I plan on having strawberries and blueberries this year! hopefully. I have cleaned out the house and sold some old stuff.

Next weekend I plan on a FULL BLOWN spring cleaning. I am motivated! It is great to be able to open the house up and let the cool air blow thru. It is still too cold to leave the house open at night but by then I really need the heat on in the house.

I have my first appointment in 10 days at the University of Chicago for my blood tests and physical. It is the REAL beginning of my Islet Cell Transplant!!! I am excited and also feel I need to get the house done and cleaned before I get too worn out by the entire transplant process.

I am trying to stay focused on walking 3 miles a day and logging all the particulars of the diabetes care. My new meter is a constant log of all my food, insulin and exercise. It is a lot of work but a wealth of information. I uploaded the first weeks information to the Minimed web site and evaluated my insulin usage. It really is helping me fine tune my pump dosages. I have lowered my daily basal rate from 28.2 units of insulin to 25.25 units of insulin. That is amazing. It wouldn’t have happened without all the exercise.

On the advice of Dr. O at UIC, I have been walking 3 miles a day and 6 miles a day on the weekends. It is supposed to put my body in fat burning mode and help me to lose a few of my flabby pounds. RotKnee doesn’t mind either. He is glad that I can keep up with him now. Our walks are fast and fun. Keeping up with Lucy is impossible so I can’t even try.

I have still been trying to ride the bike with Lucy at lunch every day. It is hard to give that up. Lucy can go so fast that she will outpace me even when I am riding the bike as fast as I possibly can!!! She is an amazing dog and a great buddy.

Through it all I am VERY happy and looking forward to all the hard work that will be involved in transplant process. It is exciting to think that I really am going to be a small part of the cure.

I have never heard of Only Fools and Horses… RotKnee came out of Rodney being a VERY TALL dude and all I could see were his knees…

I have found that by 3 pm every day, my body NEEDS to start walking. I believe they call that an addiction! Finally, a good addiction!

Got Rhodos but not Azaleas. I can’t keep Azaleas alive. I am constantly going low while working in the yard but that just gives me an excuse for a break. I love the Spring when everything is fresh and new. Even after all the rain we are having right now.

It was about 50 here when I did mine. When the shoots start coming up you HAVE to break them up. I even did it super sloppy and totally messy. All the newly moved hostas are looking awesome along the fenceline! Even the squirrels have left them alone, for now.
