Portland meet up

Hi there. I’ve been looking for a Portland, Oregon Meet-Up for active/health oriented type 1 diabetics and haven’t found one. So…I’m thinking of starting a Facebook group and/or Meet-Up. I’m wondering if others are interested and if there is anyone in the community who would like to help me get this going. I envision a monthly pot-luck and/or outdoor activity plus an online forum to build community.

Thoughts?

As an ambassador for TuD, I arranged meet-ups in PDX for several years. They are a wonderful, fun way to connect. However, I am a not-so-healthy T2 with numbers in the normal range using diet and exercise only. But due to fibromyalgia and arthritis and COPD, my daily workouts are gentle. I was, however a professional dancer for 40 years and began hiking–on Hood, in particular, not long after moving here in 1976…

I also connected with TuD members in Mpls when I went back there to care for my mother…

We did potluck picnics, but also gathered at coffee shops. I would schedule meeting for a time of day when having a beverage was acceptable in case someone couldn’t afford to dine out. I also made sure that one could get to the café easily on MAX or a bus. Each one was set for a different part of town. And watch traffic flow timing in case you can pull in some folks from Salem or Eugene…

At first you may only get a couple folks, but that is a good start because word does spread…

I also made it clear that, like here at TuD, any type of diabetic and/or their family members were welcome. At every gathering, people chatted comfortably as if they had known each other for years…This is a meetup in NW PDX

And this is in Mpls with Kathy Putzier and Scott Johnson, both of whom I knew well from here at TuD
