Endo just took me off Humalog and reduced Lantus. I seem to be spiking at 3 hours not 2. I do seem to come back down by 4. Is this an OK pattern or should I worry and talk about going back on insulin?
A lower carb diet with higher protein in your meal can cause the protein to be digested and cause a blood sugar rise over 3-5 hours. Carbs tend to cause a rise over 1-2 hours. It really depends on what kind of rise you are observing. Are you going over 200 mg/dl at 3 hours or are you just at 120 mg/dl?
Brian - No. My spike was 120. pre-meal 103, 1 hour 79, 2 hour 85, 4 hour 91. LCHF diet (I try for moderate protein)
I have to tell you, in my twisted part of the world that isn’t a spike. It is actually almost noise since your meter is only accurate +/- 20%. It is however common for half the protein you eat to be converted to blood sugar over 3-5 hours. So if you have say 25g of protein for your meal then your might have the equivalent of say 12 g of carbs in that meal just for protein and you will a blood sugar rise several hours after your meal.
Frankly I would not worry about using insulin to deal with this. If your blood sugar rose to say 200 mg/dl at 3 hours then there are ways to dose later or split your dose in order to handle it.
Thanks Brian! Just a little nervous going off all Humalog. I will watch for a spike over 180? I had (unknown to me) uncontrolled T2 and lost my toes on one foot and am trying to avoid all further complications. So, hence, all the caution.
