Post Surgery and Bg Levels

I had a liver biopsy the other day and I have been experiencing elevated BG levels afterwards since the operation. Has anyone else experienced elevated BG levels post operation?

There were some elevated BG levels after my hip replacement. This was coupled with a non-diabetic diet provided by the hospital. Instead of my Metformin, the hospital gave me insulin shots. Complained so much that got sent home.
Good Luck.

Ive had elevated bg levels after a back surgery 3 years ago. It ranged from 180 to 220) It took 2 days before it actually went close to normal. Just like Les, they took me off metformin and gave me insulin shots. Im not sure if they attribute it to no or lack on food intake and complete reliance to IV fluids…or just the stress of being in so much pain.

Thank you for the help.

Yes! And your liver is traumatised after the biopsy (I do not envy you! I had one, and it damn well hurt!) which is probably why it is throwing out more sugar. It should settle down.

I have had several operations recently mostly minor and it could be the medications they give you during or after that that make things worse. That and stress of being in hospital, waiting for results etc!

I now insist quite categorically that if I am conscious and reasonably capable of doing so that I do my own insulin management in hospital. The first few times they insisted on giving me human insulin (to which I am super sensitive/borderline allergic) and spent an awful lot of time being hypo as a result. On pork insulin I am somewhat better. In the UK they do not seem to know how to deal with diabetes on surgical wards. I have even been accused of giving myself extra insulin while the nurses are not looking in order to bring about a hypo. Whaaat? Whyyy? When I am using human insulin I can hypo up to 6 times a day, and of course they do not turn the pump off while it is happening! So double whammy!

After my surgeries a few months back my bloods were all over the place because my routine was affected by the hospitals routines, 3 meals a day. The doctor had to write up a fourth meal for the evening! And I was also on antibiotics and pain killers which didn’t help my levels.

Don’t think I’m a nutty crazywoman, but I like to bop around TD and randomly leave people music videos. Hope your B Gs are better.
