Protein snacks

seems like I get a better morning bg when I have a snack with protein around 930pm
anyone have any ideas on evening protein snacks you can pass on (yogurt is out yuk)
thx
ruth

Do you bolus protein? Fact is if you have a meal with enough carbs you can pretty much ignore proteins but if you are low carbing that should be considered.

In my opinion protein in the night are more likely to be converted into glucose and need to bolus it. But that's just a personal consideration, you should try and see!

Protein snacks? Ham, bacon, any kind of meat or egg in any form. If you can get some (few) carbs you have also tofu, nuts, seeds, cheese. It's more fat than protein actually but that's what comes to my mind right now!

thx for your input rick
having problems with my morning bg
I take it around 4 to 5 am if I happen to wake up and get 5 to 6/ go back to bed without eating or drinking, by 8 am it's jumped to 7 or 8. thought maybe not enough protein to keep me going through the night
I am trying a low carb diet at this time

Beef jerky. sausage, smoked salmon, cheese. I tend to eat a fatty protein at night. Personally, I have found I do better with a little bit of carb too so pb on wasa, hummus and carrots, apple and cheese. Of course, I'll eat nearly anything for a snack so I often will eat a cold chicken breast that I cooked ahead or hard boiled eggs.

that sounds like an issue with the dawn phenomenon. The protein snack you eat at 9pm wouldnt have an effect on your bg rise at 6am...that food would be long out of your system. and if you do eat more to keep your bgs up in the middle of the night, your morning rise will only be that much higher.
You shouldnt have to eat to keep your bg up, so i would start with adjusting your basal. Maybe it should be lower earlier in the night and higher in the morning when your bgs go up.

I like a piece of wheat bread with 1 tbs of peanut butter on it. It's perfect if you need some carbs along with your protein, cover the carbs you don't need

Didn't tell me if you bolus protein! I had some issue with snacking before bed, in some way it affects my bg through the night. Don't know it is about the insulin I bolus with or the snack itself.

Actually right now I'm on three big (high fat/low carb) meals just to have more awareness of what's happening on my BG. Maybe later when I'll have perfect control I add some more snacks.

Are you going low without the snack at 930pm? Protein are out of your system as Shawn said if you snack them at 930pm. And even if that was not the case, more protein would rise you BG more. Your rise seems to be caused by the Dawn Phenomenon.

rick I have no idea what you mean about bolus protein!????

I am on oral meds , mediformin 500 mg 3 times daily & 1 5mg of onglyza

my after meal readings range from 8 to 6 most of the time since I started watching my carbs it's just those morning jumps I can't seem to control
it seems not to make a difference in 3 days now if I snack at night or not still get those jumps
I never experience lows
appreciate your input

thx for you input whirligig & leah
appreciated
every little info helps

I like peanut butter for a late night snack. I really don't need the snack but I like peanut butter. I think it has enough protein to fill the bill and a few carbs too.

Sorry I thought you were on shots! Didn't check you profile, my fault.

I really can't say anything then ;) I'm a T1 and don't know how your meds work.

I wouldnt eat anything before bed if you are not on insulin. The meds you are on wont drop you low, so im sure you arent going below the normal range of 5 over night. sounds like your meds need to be adjusted for the morning jump, but like rick im a T1 so am of no help when it comes to oral medication.

Bacon jerky is a wonderful snack. Its fairly lean compared to regular bacon is extremely convenient.
