Pumping Our Insulin

Hmm I just went to the OmniPod page, and saw a picture on the cover page of a guy with one on his arm, and it looks HUGE. But i ordered a trail anyway. i am wondering whether or not the trial will be the smaller newer one coming out.

Janice, sounds like you have pretty good insurance. Who is your insurance with?

Meg, have you checked out the photos of any of the pod users here on TuDiabetes? We have a super active discussion group for podders. Feel free to join even if you’re only mildly interested. The pod’s really not that big. The trial will be the regular size. They haven’t released the smaller ones yet.

Here is a photo I took with a pod next to a bunch of standard supplies: http://www.tudiabetes.org/photo/583967:Photo:230527?context=user

@Meg, the ominpod group is great! I was somewhat interested in the pod when I jointed the group and was able to get a ton of feedback to help in my decision.

@Chauncey…BCBS of Illinois.

A couple other photos for Meg. I had three quarters I used for size comparison.

Just saw this posted to another group outside TuD. Thought it might be helpful:

Hi Everyone,
I’ve just got myself the Accu-Chek 360 software. I can download my Performa meter fine, but my D-TRONplus Pump doesn’t seem to work. Has anyone else had any trouble with download their pumps?
Here’s a link to a video of the process I went through.

Perhaps you can spot the problem.
Thanks,
Hamish

Is anyone still pumping reg insulin in their pumps? I was just wondering b/c everything is fast acting these days but I do not seem to remember having any kind of problems with the reg insulin back when I first started. My Endo actually didn’t like the fast acting stuff when it first started being used in the pumps b/c of the fast break down and all. Just wondering is all.

Hi Sandy. Regular does work in a pump, but more slowly. My experience was with a MM522. I became very impatient waiting for corrections to get done. It is an option of course if you don’t have any fast acting. When I wear my pump, I use Apidra.

I have gone through the Novo / Humalog and am now on Apidra. I just used the reg long long time ago in my pump and I think I may have had better control with less fast swings if that makes sense.

Regular is fairly inexpensive and otc.; call your local pharmacies and see which is least expensive. Then you could buy a vial and try it out again. Good luck.

There are some T2D’s who use basal insulin in a pump, and do not need a bolus. This allows them to use the varying basal rates and eliminate DP. They still diet and exercise to handle the carbs.

Need suggestions, please. I’ve been on an insulin pump since September, 2010. All of a sudden in the last week, the amount that my blood sugar rises after meals is much higher than before. My post-prandial numbers are fine, under 140. It’s just that the height of my blood sugar in response to food is higher. Before, it usually didn’t rise higher than about 150. How it goes as high as 180 or 190. My food choices have remained the same. Can I adjust something to reduce the height of the rising? I’m afraid if I increase my basal rate, I’ll just go low before the next meal. If I change the carb ratio, it seems like I would go low at the two hour mark or shortly after. I will say that here in South Louisiana, it’s been really hot the last week, but I thought insulin needs went down in the summer?

I’ve had a long weekend Carmen, so maybe it’s me. You said your post-pran #s are under 140,thensaid they go as high as 180-190? Can you clarify for me please?

Sorry for the confusion. My post prandial number is almost always under 140 even now. However, before it starts to come down after eating, my bg now goes as high as 180 or 190 before it starts coming back down. Before the last week, the increase after I ate was only to about 150 and then it came down to below 140 at the two hour post prandal time. For whatever reason, my bg is now going much higher before it comes down, but it does still come down to below 140 at the two hour mark. Is that clearer?

So as I understand it your 2 hour BG is where you want it, below 140, but it goes up too high before coming back down. Have you considered pre-bolusing? Maybe start at 15 min before you eat then increasing as needed?

You are correct. It’s just started going that high and I’m not doing anything different.
I do bolus about 15 minutes before I eat. I just think it’s strange that all of a sudden this is happening. I’ve also tried doing a combo bolus but that is actually worse. Maybe since it’s only started this week, it will stop as quickly. I can only hope. If not, I have an endo appointment in about two weeks. I can ask her then.

Same thing happened to me suddenly a couple of weeks ago. I increased my pre-bolus time. Well, when I do pre-bolus… sometimes I’m too hungry!
