Question About Fiber?

OK so i was thinking since fiber doesnt really effect us if i had say a 10g carb meal and took a Fiber supplement for 5g would that mean i bolus 5g? or is it different…

I find the whole fiber thing too confusing so I usually ignore it

Brian, I never count the fiber grams. I subtract them. I bolus for the total carb grams less the fiber & voila! I return to where I was. If I were doing it, I’d bolus for the 10 grams.
So we’re all different, I guess!

You can’t compensate for carbs by taking additional fiber. When fiber is subtracted out from carbs, it’s because the fiber content accounts for some of the carbs in that particular food. Adding more fiber with a supplement doesn’t negate the carbs in the food you’re eating. Fiber slows down digestion, so you may see a delay in BG rising.

I don’t trust food labeling for fiber because fiber is the latest trend. Companies want to claim high fiber for their products. The only time I subtract fiber from carbs is if the food has so much fiber that it’s almost all the total carbs.

We were to subtract fiber for a food if it is over five grams. But that is for a food. I do not know how a five gram supplement is digested; how long it takes, or even if it works as claimed.

yea i figured but i just thought id ask…

yea i had a bunch of almonds which have 5g carbs and 3g fiber per serving and i had 3 servings and took .6 units and it seemed to have worked out fine

Courtney,

It’s different when fiber is part of the food as opposed to taking a fiber supplement. The fiber supplements do’ nothing to offset the carbs in what’s eaten, other than slow down digestion some.

When the carb count of a food contains a lot of fiber, some people deduct the fiber from the carb count because some of carbs are fiber.

Very good to know. What brand of double fiber bread? I will try it. P.S. Did you, or did you not, subtract for the fiber in the bread? We do subtract.

Yes im curious to know this also…
