For about six months he has been complaining about “ants” on his finger and toes. Not sure if it is pain or tingling. The doctor said it may be Restless Leg Syndrome or he just like saying ants. This bothered me so I had my dad (who is a diabetic) check his sugar levels. It read 180 about an hour after eating then by two hours it was normal. (This by the way took place about a month ago) I called my son doctor and she said to randomly check it.
Today my dad checked my son’s sugar level because he has been peeing alot. It was about 30 minutes after he ate and it read 370. He check it again (I’m guess about a hour later) and it was 490. He ate pancakes (without syrup but with sugar in batter). I had to pick him up from my dads and by the time I got him to the hospital his level was 89 (this was about 2 hours after eating). They did blood work and everything was normal. BTW, he has always (including this time of high bg) acted completely normal as if nothing is wrong at all.
Has anyone else every had this? The doctor (not his doctor) didn’t seem to concerned but told me to keep an eye on him.
370 and 490 are definitely not normal. I’ve never heard of someone having those numbers and then two hours later being 89 without taking any insulin. I would also check that meter with control solution to see if it’s working correctly. You may be getting some inaccurate numbers. Get yourself and your son his own meter. If he really was 490, you would probably notice heavy breathing, heart palpitations, extreme thirst and lethargy. Please keep us posted about him. We’re glad you joined us.
My dad checked his own BG between the times that he check my sons and my dads was normal. He said he cleaned his finger well.
I have a list of test results from the hospital. Four of them the doctor went over with me.
Here they are:
CO2 21
Gluc 90
Acetone Serum Neg
Ketones Urine Neg
I have a whole page of test results but those of the ones the doctor went over with me.
Hi Felicia! Welcome to TuDiabetes! I’m glad that you found us!
There are two possibilities that I can think of:
(1) when he tested his blood sugar and got these high readings, his hands were not clean (he had some food, sugar, or anything else). Touching a piece of cheese then measuring your blood sugar can lead to readings of 400 even when your blood sugar is normal. ( I just read that your dad did clean his finger…)
(2) You have caught a case of type 1 diabetes very early on. I’m not a medical professional and cannot diagnose based on this information. But in the early phases of type 1 diabetes, blood sugars are normal when fasting or a few hours after eating, but they are high right after eating.
You should request a glucose tolerance test, a test for GAD antibodies, and an A1c. By catching diabetes early, you can help your son a lot. So you should be VERY proactive about this.
My dad has type 1 and my husband’s father has type 2.
I look over the sheet of result that I was given. There are some labs still pending.
They are:
Hgb A1C
C Pepticle
Insulin Antibody
Islet Cell Autoantibodies
Anti GAD 65 Antibody
Hgb A1C- = 3 month blood sugar average
C Peptide = measures the amount of insulin being produced in the body
Insulin Antibody, Islet Cell Autoantibodies, Anti GAD 65 Antibody = checks for autoimmune attack on the insulin producing cells in the pancreas
Hope the results come back soon. Please keep us posted!
His Hgb A1C was 5. I know this is fine but he also got back his C Peptide it was 1.2 I’m not sure what this should be.
I am still waiting for the others. And I did get my son’s doctor to set up and appt with and Endo because of the “ants” that he feels. BTW, he has not complained about “ants” since we went to the hospital. We have been watching what he eats very closely.
Diabetes TrialNet is doing a study right now that can detect any of the four known antibodies that appear 6-7 or more years prior to manifestation of classic Type 1 symptoms. They will perform this test once per year at no cost to you.
I know that C-peptide results can vary from lab to lab. They might have listed the normal range on the blood work, if you get it on paper at some point. But here is an article about normal c-peptide ranges.
The A1c is good. It’s great that you are being so proactive. The study that Jason recommends is a GREAT idea!
My niece does have “itchy” sensations in her extremities and fingers when low. This is new. Hoping this is not damage to her system. But she brought it up at the last endo visit. Endo did not seem to think it worrisome.

Endo did not seem to think it worrisome. Am I reading correctly and your child is not diabetic? 370 and 490 are very abnormal readings. Yes, I have heard of high readings where the child comes down to normal without insulin. Have read a lot of cases like that on the children with diabetes forums. There are times the child is eventually diagnosed with diabetes and there are times when they are not. Next time, give Orange Juice while he is at the ER so you can keep those blood sugar readings up so the doctors take you seriously and you get a proper diagnosis. I think you have caught a diabetes diagnosis very early. Your son will go very high after a high carb meal but it is possible his pancreas is still producing enough insulin to bring him into range. I would keep watching, keep checking (a good time to check would be after a high carb, fast-acting carb breakfast). I don’t know if the blood work will help yet as he may be a pre-diabetic, very early stage diabetic. And it is possible there is another explanation.
Tomorrow is my son’s appt with the endo. I know all his test came back fine but are there any questions I should ask? His BG has been normal since we went to the hospital but we have had him on a “diet”… Avoiding sugars, most high carb foods, eating mostly wheat breads and pasta, eating more veggies!
Do you have the actual results of his A1c & C-peptide & whatever other tests were done? Hard to imagine that with readings of 370 & 490 that his A1c would be in the normal range.
You could request a glucose tolerance test, if they haven’t done one. Some people have normal fasting numbers, but go high after meals as you’ve seen with your son. Young children can have normal BG in the 70’s.
Great that your watching his diet carefully & that you caught this early. Agree with Jan that he still must be producing insulin, but sadly not enough from those previous highs. Pasta is a high carb food & so is bread:) Grains of any kind turn to glucose almost instantly, but if you’re testing him & it’s not a problem that’s wonderful.
Thanks for the reply Gerri. I don’t have his result right here in front of me but I think his A1C was 5 and the C Peptide was 1.2
His pasta and bread (wheat) has been limited. What really bothers me is since we started this “diet” he has not complained of “ants” or tingling in his hands or feet. My dad who is D has tingling when he gets really high BG.
I have been reading some info on MODY diabetes. I not sure exactly what this is. To my understanding this is some kind of gene defect that can be inherited when there is T1 in the family. The body produces insulin up to certain point then it can’t keep up. Does anyone have info on this?
