Question - Normal Range = sick

How long does it take to start feeling good when you manage to keep your sugars in the normal range. Here in Canada the normal range is between 4 & 7 mmol/L. I feel tired, sometimes queasy and everything just takes so much effort. Please advise if you have an answer.

BG before meal tonight 6.3 hoping for a good result for the after meal test. Had 2 cabbage rolls

Personally, I recently gave up (with the advice of my endo) on having normal BG’s. I was exhausted all the time and couldn’t function properly. Have had T1 for 16 mo’s. Tried the normal BG thing for the past 8 months. Gave up on it one month ago. Feel better, have energy. can function, but am I worried…? YES. But this is what I have to do right now. I’m not recommending it, just saying.

It has been so long I am not really sure how long it took. I saw that you also posted this on your blog and Peetie said that she also felt sick with Metforim. I am T1 so not familiar with how the various T2 drugs make you feel, but maybe you could ask your doctor to change you to a different one. Met also comes in an extended release form (XR) that I have seen other people doesn’t make them as sick. Maybe at least you can get rid of the queasy feeling.

I also saw that you were also very fatigued even before being diagnosed. It is possible that you have something else going on. You said that the first doctor tested your thyroid and iron levels. Did you actually ask for those test results to know what was done and where you stood? A lot of doctors don’t really get thyroid and I understand that is even worse in Canada than here. Some doctors seem to think that if you have a high TSH that is still within lab range, your thyroid is fine. The two tests that need to be checked are Free T4 and Free T3. My thyroid was pretty much non-functioning because my FT4 was not even registering a number and I had a doctor tell me my thyroid was fine. I switched doctors and he looked at the exact same tests and told me my numbers were horrible!

I would not run your BS high to try and feel better. I have complications because I was diagnosed before we knew the stuff we know today. They are not something I would wish on anyone. If you think you feel bad now, you don’t want to trade that for complications!

If you have gotten used to being high all the time, then yes when you first get back to normal ranges you do feel a little off for a bit. You feel like you are a little on the low side but are actually right on target. If memory serves it takes about a week of normal blood sugar before you become accustomed to what “normal” is.

Metformin can make you queasy at first and will tear up your stomach, mostly you will see diarrhea. But it goes away quickly, couple of days of being on it and you are fine.

I back up what Kelly WPA says: Do not run your BS high to try and feel better. High blood sugar will destroy your body and it is just not worth it.

For whatever reason I seem to feel most normal at 85 to 110, about 4.7 to 6.1. Above or below I usually feel noticeably funky and pull out the meter to figure out why. Today the waitress slipped me a normal Coke by mistake. I figured it out because I was suddenly happy and feeling good. A shame that’s a sign of something wrong. lol

LOL - I feel that way too. When I have been high I get silly, but I do realize now that those ups and downs are not really that fun. I much prefer my even self.
