Seasonal Allergies.. What do you use - OTC or prescription?

Pre-D - I loved using Chlor-Trimeton, cleared up sinuses and lasted for 12 hours. But after D, I tried it and I was knocked out for over a day (luckily, it was the weekend).

Currently, I'm using Zyrtec liquid gels, but I'm finding they have a drowsy component, too. I take it just before bed, so it works fine.

Just wondering, what do you use?

i use a homeopathic remedy by Dolisos. they have regional blends. they work very well, and they have absolutely no side effects. and its inexpensive.

my seasonal allergies are torture without this stuff.

Thanks for the recommendation. It looks like their products are available thru online vendors. (Sometimes, here in Hawaii, the only way to get the good stuff is to order it online and have it delivered.)

Flonase does the trick for me. Tried Nasonex but that didnt do much. I found the prescription stuff works better but you have to find one that works. My Dr had some samples which was nice.

I think I tried Flonase (prescription strength) once. My body had a weird allergic reaction to it, broke out with these little bumps here and there. I thought they were my lymph nodes but my doc said they weren’t related. But they went away, as soon as I stopped taking Flonase, so there was some connection.

I use Reactine (antihistamine) and Avamys (nasal spray), and together they work well. I also have prescription eye drops because my eyes got so irritated before I started using the Avamys that OTC drops did nothing. I’ve only had to use them a few times, though.

I never had problems with seasonal/environmental allergies until 2006 (though I have had food allergies since childhood), and now they are worse every time I get retested. This year allergy season started a month early and I wasn’t prepared; it caused my blood sugars to go crazy as if I was actually sick, until I went to the doctor for prescription medication.

I think between the food allergy, seasonal allergies, environmental allergies, and type 1 diabetes my immune system is just a bit over-reactive!

I just carry a wad of tissues and breathe through my mouth until the allergy spell is over. Any allergy medication I try tends to screw up my insulin sensitivity and my blood glucose control goes haywire.

I use Claritin

Iv used Claritin which has sort of stopped working and gone to Zyrtec, I use Flonase (prescription), as well as Nasacort AQ (which I like better but is NOT formulary)… Also have used Patanol which is no longer covered so i use Zadiator/Al-Away (Al Away is a 60 day supply and is usually cheaper than Zadiator, plus its made by Bauch and Lomb)…(My eyes during the spring/summer allergy season look completely bloodshot and iv had some front-of-eye bleeds which i was told can be caused by irritated blood vessels due to severe allergies)

My allergies are very bad. I found Zyrtec made me less sleepy than Benadryl which i still use for contact dermatitis (if im around a dog/cat that im reacting to)…You end up trying different ones to see what works… but since all of them block/reduce histamine, theres gonna be a slight drowsiness to most forumulations…

I also take Zyrtec, before bed… my allergies seem to be worst for me overnight, so that has been working out well.

In addition I take Flonase, which has IMO been a miracle drug for me. Between the two I’ve been feeling better than I have in years.

I still use benadryl occasionally for breakthrough allergy flares - it seems to work better/faster than almost anything else, even if it does knock me out. I would say in the past 3 months I’ve needed to take the benadryl maybe twice.

thats why i go with the homeopathic stuff…well, that and i get really wasted on the other stuff…i hate that.

yea, i order it online. its really good stuff.

Zyrtec 24 hour works great for me

I have had allergies from certain types of grass, pollen, heat and dust for a long time now…not to mention I’m highly allergic too to some drugs. Before I was also taking Chlor-Trimeton, it works pretty well but indeed one side effect is drowsiness. My doctor prescribed Virlix (Flexyx). It is a second-generation histamine H1 antagonist that is effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, urticaria (skin rashes/hives), and pollen-induced asthma. Unlike many traditional antihistamines, it does not cause drowsiness.

chlor-trimeton works for me

Zyrtec (well the generic Costco brand Like $15 for a year supply)
Flonase - have to watch it, though, because if I skip the flonase, my blood sugar drops.

I used to get alergies so bad that I would get bronchitis or an ear infection at least 3 times a year. Flonase was a miracle for me. When I started getting horrible headaches, the doctor had me add zyrtec, adn it was a miracle for me.

Teena, Virlix is the same as Zyrtec, they’re both brand names for the generic drug Cetirizine. My T1 daughter has been taking this for over a year now, and it works great.

I haven’t noticed any increase in BG from the Flonase myself… but my CDE did warn me about it. I was on Flovent years ago for Asthma, and it’s essentially the same drug, and I never had problems then either.

I know…but thank you =) I gave the brand I was prescribed and using because Im highly allergic to certain drug chemicals…So I have learned from my physician that (in my case) some drugs may have the same component but may have a different base that I may show reactions too. Sucks! I found it out the hard way a long time ago(long story). My back was patched with different types of drug components, food items, and common allergens…and it was no fun at all LOL
Virlix(Cetirizine) works pretty good for me too! Im glad its working for your daughter. What is your daughter’s allergens ?
