Can one of the Moms refresh me on sick day procedures? In three years of Type 1 we have never had to deal with high numbers when he was sick.
My son, now 18, has mono and his numbers are running consistently in the 200s. He is on bedrest week and at times runs a under 100 degree fever. He has not had much appetite so he has partial bolused for part of his meals and partial bolused for the remainder if he does in fact eat it. This timing could account for some of the increase but probably not 100 points.
We changed his pod early last night hoping it was an absorption issue or old insulin issue. Initially it seemed to help as he was only 125 for breakfast (only 25 over his target) but then he was back in the 200s pre lunchtime.
And, he leaves for college in a week. No stress here!
I have a 5 year old and unfortunately we have had many sick days - the most important thing is to watch his ketones. Our daughter gets ketones pretty quickly so we use a blood meter to check for ketones - it has been a lifesaver. We will usually give her a temporary basal (usually between 25 and 50%)when she is sick. Also, if she is not eating well, pedialyte and chocolate milk help - we use chocolate milk when she has ketones - eating something with carbs and bolusing helps to clear the ketones. Also water, water, water.
Good Luck - hope he feels better right away!
THe viruses seems to affect their numbers for longer than infections - guess they take longer to recover from..
what bad timing, i hope he has a quick recovery. for a fever illness we usually do a temp basal increase at least 25% his resting more than being active like ussual could also be driving his numbers up. hang in there, you have been lucky to have never had to deal with highs related to illness before. i'll be thinking of you both! amy
i agree with celeste on the water front!
