Sleep and affect on BG numbers

Just wondering if anyone can share their experiences with whether not getting enough sleep causes higher BG numbers? My numbers have crept up the past 2 1/2 weeks or so. I’m a tax accountant and am finding it difficult to get more than 5 1/2- 6 hours sleep per night since tax season started the beginning of February. Thanks!

Teresa: I’ve actually thought about doing a segment on this for our podcast (http://www.SweetTalk.org). I think it does have an impact on your numbers. I have actually read some research about sleep apnea, and lack of sleep thereof that puts our bodies in fight or flight mode - which raises adrenaline - which tells our body we need more glucose for energy. I am not a good sleeper, and I think when I don’t get more than 7 hours, my numbers are tell-tale in the morning. I’ve been using this pzizz.com program to catch a few rest winks in the middle of the day. I hope it is addressing my relaxation issues and what that does to my numbers.

Dear teresa

Definitely worst BG with lack of sleep.

Any kind of stress affects BG numbers. And lack of sleep is a major stressor! So I’d say yes.

Thanks everyone for the information. The more I learn about Diabetes, the more I realize that it seems that just about everything you eat or do will affect your numbers. I guess it’s a learning process. Thanks again.

My BG, goes ballistic when I work like a dog and don’t sleep well. I do not have a good way to avoid it. I used to negotiate labor agreements, police, fire, teachers etc. When I was in the mode my sugar jsut went out of control. I thnk it is adreneline.

Rick

Boy, you got that right, Teresa!

Lack of sleep raises mine.

Guys for sure lack of sleep very bad for BG. I ate very little yersterday which is usually wonderful for morning BG. Started new anti-eating pill called meridia. Well bg was at 12.9 mmol/L or 230 mg/DL. New pill may disturb sleep. The meter reading was not goofy because it took a hell of at lot of insulin to bring it down to 140.

Give our regards to the IRS. We are not sure if we have to deal with them as my son was working here in Canada only, for a company in Tennessee doing some game development. We will assume that not, since the IRS did not deduct anything and this acording to NAFTA. May be in ten years time he will be arrested at the US border for some tax violation. Dealing with revenu canada is pain in the ■■■ enough.

Rick that must have been like negotiating between God and the Devil. Just a retorical question and you dont have to answer. We are in the middle of something that may approach the great depression. There was a paper mill in the middle of Newfoundland were there are no jobs to be had even at the minimum wage. Getting a job a the mill was like winning a big lottery the average pay at the mill was somewhere between $60,000 to $100,000 with no education, the non unionized engineers were paid less. and this in a very low cost environment.

The company lost money over the last 10 years and they asked some out sourcing concessions from the union. The current request did not include pay cuts. The union refused and the mill was shut down permanently. Am I crazy or was the union too hard nosed in view of the current economic times?

Also the only people getting raises in canada now are the top executives and Govt employees. With the real estate collapsing will cities and states be able to fund all these contractual obligations? will not tax dollars shrink?

By the way the paper mill will not be bailed out since that would be illegal according to the North american free trade agreement. But is seems car companies are a different beast.

I read that there is a strong correlation with sleep apnea and T2, and lack of sleep and weight gain. It all ties in somehow.

Yeah, so I’ve heard. Going to the sleep lab on 3/13. Let’s see what they say!

Lack of sleep makes my morning bg soar. But, on occasion, I think that tossing and turning may come from being low and not recognizing it, and then you’re dealing with bg rebound as well.
I have taken meds for sleep for the last 6 years, and they have made a huge difference. No, I certainly didn’t want to get started on something with the potential for dependency but now realize it was the best choice, all things considered.

I rarely get more than 4 hours of continous sleep and my numbers are always higher in the mornings when I wake up than at night.

Dear Jeremy.

Sorry to have to welcome you to this site. If you are in your middle to late 50’s then the sleep problem is par for the course. I cannot sleep for more than 4 hours regardless of BG levels and my wife who is in her early 60’s and a non diabetic also cannot. But if you are younger there may be good news as your blood sugars come down into the normal range you may be able to get a bit longer period per night. I find it a problem sleeping when BG above 140 and very bad if below 70. And of course morning sugars are always a lot higher than at night I think this is called the dawn effect. Might be caused by the stress of getting up or something.

Dear Kathy.

Zopiclone or immovane is not addictive. If you take it too many nights in a row it stops working. does not mess up the BG. again better than skyrocketted BGs. I get hot and sweaty at night on occaision sometimes it is because BG has gone below 90 and sometimes not BG is fine, so go figure.

MomsL8’s post is right in line with what I’ve been reading. Poor sleep raises cortisol levels resulting in increased BG levels.

Here’s an interesting article on cortisol’s importance in glucose regulation. About.com article

Dear Mr. Peachy.

Great article, sems even to cause osteoporosis. You wonder why they do not teach stress relief techniques in school given that this is so important.

Thanks for posting the article. It’s amazing what poor sleeping patterns and stress can do to your BG and your body. Wow.

Out of curiosity, how zonked do the sleep meds make you? I’ve thought about investigating them but fear that I wouldn’t hear my kids at night if they needed me and my husband happens to be working nights. My boys have asthma and if they are sick, it’s not uncommon for them to need treatments during the wee hours. Thanks fo rthe input.
