A friend called me today after a visit with her father to get the new and better equipment for sleep apnea. One of the brochures she grabbed on the way out said that sleep apnea can cause elevated AM blood sugars. Anyone know if this is so?
Since sleep apnea is a sleep disorder, I think studies found out that better quality of sleep, results to better diabetes control, hence having a better blood sugar, particularly in the morning. I think the study was more focused with people with type 2 diabetes. I read somewhere that there is a therapy called CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) claiming that it improves blood sugar levels by lowering insulin resistance. Restless sleep causes an elevation in hormones that work against insulin’s action. By improving sleep, CPAP may also improve hormone levels.
I believe that it is true. I have both Type 1 and sleep apnoea and find that when I do not use the breathing apparatus (now because I have an open scar on my face or because I fall asleep before I can put the mask on, my sugars are always higher in the morning. I believe it is because of the stress that your body goes under while you have stopped breathing.
I wonder if I should get evaluated. I have crashing-into-me-like a train fatigue at some time most days and have to sleep, or pull into a parking lot and nap! Thanks for the info ladies.
jrtpup - I would get yourself checked out! You won’t lose anything by it, but you sound familiar to me! My sugars were not too bad, but can fall asleep anywhere, any time - except when my mother is driving - and then I suffer a mental breakdown!
What amazing things a simple restful sleep can do. There are sleep disorder clinics or facilities in most areas…if not, most larger hospitals has one too. The sleep disorder experts are called " somnologists" .A team will generally comprise of a physician, a psychiatrists and a psychologist., Ask your doctor for a referral.
The process for evaluation is relatively easy…physical check up, interviews, and some psych tests… Most are “out patients” too. Good luck. I hope all will be well =)
Id have a heart attack when my Mom drives! =)
