Starting omnipod Friday

I have been doing MDI for almost 11 months now, on friday I will start on the omnipod system. Does anyone have tips for myself and others who are just starting on the omnipod? Maybe regarding activity and dependability on the pump, is it a durable pump? Any issues with specific sites with the canulla?
Thanks !

Congrats! I started on the pod in January and really like it! Have you checked out the group on TuD for the Omnipod?

I found things worked best for me when I allowed myself time to learn. Pumping (of any kind) is not the same as MDI and there will likely be a learning curve. You can do it, it may just take a little bit to figure it all out. Be patient with the process and you’ll do fine!

Like Kate said you will love it. After a while. Having a pump will put diabetes in the fore front of everything you do. It is a big change but it is for the better. The pod is very durable and you will enjoy the control you get with it. I hunt, fish, water ski, swim, and do everything else I would normally do with it. Just when you wear it on your arms watch out for walls and door jams! Good luck and be patient.

Thanks !! That’s awesome advise cause I do all those things but I was worried the pump would interfere

Thanks everyone for your input !

Will D,
I too, am an avid hunter and fisherman. I bought a knee brace at Walmart that I use on my arm when I’m in the woods. It helps keep the pod in place if I’m going thru Mountain Laurel or just tracking deer when I’m not paying to much attention to the branches.

How about water skiing ? Do u just wear it under your wet suit ? Have u ever used it in the hottub?

the issue with a hot tub is that the temperature of the insulin may get to hot and denature the insulin (then it won’t work the way it should). I’ve heard pod users going both way. The reps will tell you not to. I would likely do it if the pod were on my arm and I was planning a change within the next few hours. YDMV.

ADVICE: Always carry around extra pods and insulin! becuz they can break and need to be replaced at anytime! also their are specific batteries that are needed for best use, i cant remeber exactly i think it is energizer lithium. its weird but other batteries cause the pdm to turn off and on…the people at customer service will tell you. also when a pod breaks for anyreason call them and report it so u can get a replacement pod. also keep a watch of ur supply of pods becuz there have been many times that i didnt realize i was wearing my last one and ran out before my next shipment

WAIT i said the wrong battery it is max energizer alkaline, i just asked the CS and she said never use the eneegerizer litheium somthing about it ruining the pdm so Void that comment!

Haha thanks !
