Strange and sudden reaction to an infusion site

So, something very odd, and also what I would consider very DKA dangerous developed over last night. So right before I fell asleep I was 149, which I consider perfect for me to sleep, and this infusion set was only in for 1 day by this point, and there was nothing wrong with it at the time, or not that I noticed. I wake up in the morning with a serious thirst and that ugly salty feeling in my body, yeah you know exactly what I am talking about. I test my BG and I was 370, i then look straight at my infusion site and the spot of the cannula entry, and it is pure red and puffy looking, and very sensitive too and began to feel it more as i woke up further, I deployed my first sryinge shot in a while to get some insulin going again, and no doubt the infusion set really pissed off my skin, it had become extremely irritated from the thing, I remove the infusion and then squeeze the spot, some puss leaked out (sorry for the grose details), and so now here I am wondering, WTF is this thing? It makes me look like I got attacked by some viscous killer mosquito or something, Over the day the redness spread out further and it has formed a small mountain of a lump, very stiff, sensitive, and warm, and seeps a little sometimes. Does this look like an infection to anyone or am I just overreacting?

So here is my question, what might this be? I know somebody has had to of seen something like this before, i bet its not uncommon. So what other pumpers have run into something like this? I’m wondering if I have done something wrong, or if I just got unlucky with this one.

The fun of pumps, learning about the strange little and unwelcomed visitors like this red spot come along.

And last, should I call a doctor if this thing gets worse? the thing has steadily grown and gotten bigger throughout the day and is at its largest and most irritated state right now, these pics were a couple of hours ago.

Yes, it definitely looks like an infection, and going to the doctor would be the best thing to do. If it’s getting bigger rapidly, then you could even go to the ER, because it could be serious. I don’t want to scare you, but on the other hand, better safe than sorry.

Call the doctor. Get an antibiotic. Better safe than sorry.

heat, redness, swelling, pain, and discharge. Probably a staph infection so don’t wait. We all carry it on our skin and it causes infection when the skin breaks. And there is MRSA, resistant to most antibiotics, so it would be nice if MD did a culture and sensitivity on the drainage.

I agree, it does clearly sound like an infection, but only a doctor could tell you what kind. Do call the doctor and don’t just make an appointment but talk to a nurse or even the doctor and describe the situation and how much worse it’s gotten and ask her if you could come in and be seen today or if you should go to the ER. Since this was written 8 hours ago, hopefully you’ve already done that. Let us know how you are.

Could you ne allerigc to the needle the infusion set is useing? I have had the samething with one set of infusion sets. It is an infection. It will keep on getting bigger and hurt like all get out. Til it reaches a “head” the pus like stuff will come out of it. Go to a dr and get something for infections. NOW!

I just got up, the little thing has actually improved some, swelling has gone down and its not as big of a mountain as last night.

But I am gonna call Kaiser about it here shortly and get their word on it, i’ll find out more soon.

Thanks for all you’re responses

That is definititely an infection. May get better on its own now that the infusion set is out but it may not. Antiobiotics are likely the best bet.

I tried doing a trial period with a CGM, but right when the pharmacist inserted the sensor the whole area around it became really red and puffy. It happened almost immediately. He tried another spot - cleaning it very well prior to placement and insertion - but we had the same infection occur. We figured out that I’m one of the lucky ones who has extra bacteria and staph on the skin which is causing the repeat irritation and infection. I was told that there are special swabs I can use to eliminate all bacteria completely. I’m sorry I can’t remember the name of the swabs. I’m going to see my diabetes team tomorrow with the hopes of going on a pump. I’ll post the name tomorrow after my appt.
I’ll only be able to go on a pump if I am able to resolve the excess bacteria issue so I plan on testing in the clinic tomorrow.
Fingers crossed it works!!
