Summer 2009

Well, this summer I returned home to North Carolina and immediately began searching for some sort of volunteer opportunity with diabetes… I found two.

  1. Energize! program with a local hospital (WakeMed in Raleigh, NC)

This program works with children that have or are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. I promotes physical activity. We played games and ran around for 1 hour 3 days a week. It was fun, we had our graduation about two days ago! We saw improvements in the children’s ability to walk/run for 12 minutes, the amount of crunches completed in a minute and the sit and reach test. Great job little bits! lol

  1. I am an intern with the NC Division of Public Health- Diabetes Prevention and Control Branch.

My major task for the summer is to translate the Diabetes Self-Management Curriculum into Spanish. Oh boy that is fun! lol…

I call this position… my Spanish degree at it’s best position lol Where a Spanish degree and Public Health meet.

I’m futher learning more about diabetes and it’s control/management. It’s fun. Except I like to interact with people… I am a people person and I’m stuck in an office with no windows 3 days a week for 6 hours… so it can get a little crazy sometimes… whew.

Chelsea:)
