With apologies if a repeat discussion (searched but couldn't find anything "on point") please tell of your BG reactions to soy milk; I've suspected soy milk as the reason my BGs were for a while all over the map.
More unconsciously than not, I stopped drinking it for about a week. Today I had a 12-oz glass with lunch (half-sandwich of wheat bread, roast beef, lettuce, touch o' mayo) and shot 5 units for 35 carbs using a 1:7 ratio. BG was 194 at two hours, shot a 1:35 correction bolus of 1; BG reading of 250 two hours later meant another bolus of 3. Soy milk as a culprit therefor seems pretty clear, and I'm devastated because I love soy milk.
I did try almond milk and wasn't impressed -- I'd rather drink Kaopectate...
Are you drinking the unsweetned variety? If not, switch. I drink unsweetened soy, almond and hemp milks. But the sweetened varieties have a lot of sugar. The unsweented ones will have like 1 or 2 carbs per serving. Also if you can get the unsweetned variety in vanilla flavor it is alot better than the plain.
When you eat other soy things does it effect your sugar as well? Just wondering because it probably the sugar in the soy milk (they are all sweetened unless it says unsweetened). When in doubt look at the carbs.
Soy milk used to raise my sugar also that’s why I quit drinking it, although I liked it.
I made some almond milk last week and it was pretty Good. My Son was impressed also. My Daughter…not impressed. I guess that you have to have a liking for the taste of these types of milk.
I just bought some unsweetened original and vanilla flavoured almond milk this evening. A Good change for flavours plus it’s better for a Person.
The carton says “organic soymilk vanilla,” but no reference to “sweetened.” Looking at the nutrition label, 7 of the 9 grams is sugars. I guess I’m puzzled because it didn’t affect me before; I know, bodies change.
The almond milk I tried is Blue Diamond Almond Breeze (it certainly sounded inviting). No sugars… and I see it has tapioca starch (maybe too much, like an over-starched shirt). Maybe for grins I’ll try mixing in honey.
Oddly, I could eat a pound of soybeans (edamame) without ill effect – perhaps it’s the type of sugar, eh?
I like unsweetened almond milk (Blue Diamond), but I don’t drink it straight. I use it for shakes, baking or add unsweetened cocoa powder with a bit of stevia.
It’s probably the fiber in edamame that prevents spikes.
2 cups almonds
4 cups water
2 teaspoons vanilla
Sprinkle of sweetener(optional)
Directions:
Pour 2 cups of water in a blender
Pour in 1 cup of almonds
Add 1 teaspoon vanilla(other flavouring optional)
Add sweetener(optional)
Blend ingredients for 20 seconds, then pour through a medium or fine strainer to remove most of the pulp.
Note:
*You can also pour the 4 cups water and 2 cups almonds into a pitcher and let stand in the fridge for 24 hours for a fuller flavour(I did). Then divide in half since a blender will not hold the whole amount.
**The pulp can be divided and eaten straight or add it to applesauce, yogurt, etc. for a snack, if desired. Experiment.
***I found the straining to be a pain. Next time I would use cheesecloth to squeeze the milk from the pulp.
If it is Unsweetned, it will say it on the box - otherwise all of them have some sort of added sweeteners. And yes, 7 grams of sugars is NOT the unsweented variety.
