Tandem Autosoft XC infusion set shortage

I started using Silhouette infusion sets just over five years ago when I started DIY Loop on the MM722 pump. I bought the Sil-Serter insertion device to help me reach locations where manual insertion would be difficult or impossible.

Ha! I didn’t know that this device earned the “guillotine” label. But once you hit the release button, that insertion needle really slams home. The Silhouette sets have been extremely dependable for me. I used a similar set, the Inset 30, when I wore the Animas Ping pump.

I switched to Quick sets after sil-serter. I wish i could get them for Tandem. Much less waste, and reusable inserter device.

@MM1 the minimed silhouette is compatible with tandems VariSoft infusion. I keep old silhouetts on hand for emergencies and accidental rip offs.

Are you saying i could insert my MM quickset, and then connect it to the Tandem Varisoft tubing/cartridge ?? That would be cool!!!

That is exactly what I’m saying. I do it all the time and it works great!

You still have to have the proprietary Tandem tubing, which only comes attached to other Tandem infusion sets, though, right?

I missed that you misunderstood me. I have old Medtronic quick sets, which are very different than silhouettes. So the tandem connector would not work.
But makes more sense that others may work since all made by same company.

I think he inserts medtronic silhouette set, and disconnects Medtronic tubing (that would connect to Medt reservoir, discards it).
Then takes (reuses?) Varisoft Tandem tubing and connects to Medt silhoutte infusion set.

But no equivalent for Medt QuickSets…

Shortly I after I started using a Tandem pump, someone gave me 20 (!) boxes of Animas Contact Detach (equivalent to TruSteel and Sure-T) sets. Initially I didn’t have to change tubing because Tandem at that time was a luer lock pump. Once Tandem switched to proprietary tubing, I had to substitute Tandem tubing.

At the same time a friend on Medtronic gave me some of his extra boxes of Silhouette sets. They also worked by substituting Tandem tubing.

I wrote a blogpost about this in 2019 and the second half of the post addresses these set substitutions.

“The other end of the tubing that connects to the infusion site on your body is the same for Tandem, Medtronic, and Animas. And not only is it the same for each pump brand, it is the same for TruSteel and VariSoft sets and the Medtronic/Animas equivalents of those sets. So if I use Tandem tubing attached to my Tandem pump cartridge, I can hook the other end of the tubing onto a TruSteel, VariSoft, Medtronic Silhouette, Medtronic Sure-T, Animas Comfort, or Animas Contact Detach set.”

Proprietary infusion linking specifications? Not surprised, but that’s insane.
