Tandem mobi -- no screen thoughts

When I was on my x2 within the first two year warranty period it malfunction once. I really got scared and did not have any back up. At that time the technical support (tandem) resolved the issue with a pump reset (turn off and turn back on). But I realized I needed a backup. So I’ve my basal and bolus insulin pens just in case. Always be ready and know that any pump or cgm can fail as well.

First I was told I must purchase the mobi only as a cash purchase, telling me that since my x2 warranty will expire 12/2025. Then I believed them and then I was told I can use the tandem choice for 999$ but then another excuse that I have to wait till summer for tandem choice. Eventually I’m glad I called my insurance and found out that for each policy year my insurance was covering a NEW pump. And I was happy to switch it to insurance paid order. It took them over a week to process it and even forced me to sign a financial liability form just in case insurance wouldn’t pay. I gladly signed it and paid my copay upfront. Usually my insurance doesn’t even have a deductible, so it shouldn’t be like this. I really got disappointed as a tandem customer for my loyalty to be treated this way. At some point I got extremely close ordering Ilet from beta bionics. I had to calm down and rethink because I need full manual control as well. Ilet is fully automated.

What is the reservoir fill process? Assume it is easier than the X2 and more like other pumps. I’ve used X2 for 7 years and still hate the cartridge change.

I’ve never used any other pump up until now (tandem x2, and mobi now). So I can only compare it to the x2. The mobi cartridge is a single component. Cartridge and the vial adapter is all in one (unlike cartridge and syringe in x2). I’m still following the instructions every time on the app, just filled the cartridge twice until now, since I started it new. It’s fairly easy though. And I know that you can fill lesser amount of insulin for the mobi compared to x2 if you do frequent cartridge and infusion set changes. Mobi requires 30 units after filling the infusion tube (12 units for my 23" infusion set) so if I just fill 50 units (0.5ml) that’s OK. For x2 I had to fill minimum 80 units (before filling the tube) for it to detect more than it’s minimum 50 unit insulin requirement after filling the tubing. I usually fill between 80-100 units for 2 day change. Mobi has transparent cartridge design, so you can see visually how much insulin and whether there’s any air inside the cartridge.

Thanks and that is very much like what I experienced with Medtronic and Animas. Is the tubing fill also faster than with the X2? My impatient self is bugged by the almost 2 minutes it takes to fill my tubing. Medtronic and Animas were almost instantaneous. I haven’t used Medtronic since the Paradigm pumps so have no idea what the current procedure is now.

I would assume if you would use their 5" tubing it would be faster to fill. But because they don’t have a trusteel (steel cannula) option as 5" infusion set, I’m still on the 23" trusteel infusion set. The mobi pump is defaulted to stop filling the tubing according to the 5" for some reason (you don’t have the option to choose in the menu for your infusion set length)so the pump stops filling 5 times and I have to acknowledge that I didn’t see the drop 5 times. Which is kind of a little irritating and delaying the filling of the tubing. I do it every two days, so I guess I can live with it. But in my opinion x2 was faster because it wasn’t stopping for for filling until I would press stop. On mobi you hold the physical button and release it when it’s filled (5 times acknowledging it is only for longer infusion sets than the 5").

If you work in a secure area that follows strict rules two pumps need to come off of your list.

The Insulet OP5 controller is a crippled cellphone with camera & microphone (disabled in software) that excludes it from secure areas.

The Tandem Mobi - depending on a cellphone as its controller is also constructed so it would be excluded from secure areas.

Look up the term SCIF and what is or isn’t allowed inside. Certain sectors of software development and testing follow SCIF rules.

I am sorry about the SCIF protocols, but I am not involved in such places. Tandem mobi for me works great. I can use it where ever I am.
Perhaps considering your health condition you could consider working out of such places?

Some of use have great jobs in the secure side of the financial world.

I also had a great job, I left it due to my T1D, then I managed to get re-certified with a CGM and a pump. It requires lots of effort to comply with the regulations (at least in my case), but it was possible. As long as you can manage your T1D with or without pumps due to your profession, it should be fine. I just know that the more stress the T1D brings the more everything else falls apart. I hope you can find your resolution.

Thanks. I passed the security hurdle with Tandem CIQ & CGM.

DonR And yesterday Dexcom had loss of “Share” and “Follow”. Both of which I use for wife And SugarPixal display. Bottom line electronic is not 100% infallable . So the Mobi with out a display shouldn’t make much difference in life

I still have some unused Comfort cannulas and tubing with the Luer lock, bought for my old Animas pump. (Ayiyi, I sound like a dinosaur!) Anyway, could these connect to the Tandem Mobi? I’ve used Omnipods for the last few years, so I’ve lost touch with what’s current in cannula/tubing use.

Not really sure. I’ve started on tandem x2 with trusteel infusion set and now I’m on tandem mobi with the same infusion set (trusteel) it works. My infusion sets are supplied directly from tandem. I don’t know about any other infusion set compatibility. Maybe tandem website or technical support might be helpful?
Are you considering to get tandem mobi? Don’t let the infusion set stop you. I’m happy with full control from my phone. However it only works with dexcom g6 and iPhone at the moment. The cartridge only holds 200 units of insulin and I always only fill 100 units and replace cartridge and infusion set every two days.

Sorry, but no. Insulin pumps used to use the standard luer-lock connector that’s used in the much everything medical. But in recent years, the manufacturers have moved to proprietary connectors that don’t work with products made by other manufacturers. Tandem is using the T:lock connector now, which looks like luer-lock’s little brother. It means you can’t mate the old Animas sets to Tandem cartridges.

Actually you can use your old Animas Comfort sets with the Mobi as long as you use Tandem tubing. I think the Comforts are the same as Varisoft and they have the same connector to the infusion set as TruSteel and VariSoft. But you will have to get some extra Tandem tubing by reusing tubing or just not changing your cartridge and tubing as often as the infusion site. Because only Tandem tubing can connect to the pump.

I wrote this blogpost several years ago and the second part of the post helps explain how you can use the Comfort set with Tandem. I still have a bunch of Medtronic Silhouette sets and use them with Tandem by using Tandem VariSoft or TruSteel tubing.

Thanks! Very helpful. I guess I’ll recycle the old tubing into some sort of art project! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Ah. Following Apple’s proprietary style, I see. Hurrah for landfills, she said dryly.

I’m considering the mobi. I’m not really a early adaptor–I usually wait a bit until all the kinks have been worked out of software issues, etc. I’m not intimidated by the lack of a screen on the pump since I’m currently using Omnipod, plus I have an old iPhone that could be put to use as a backup if needed. But I do like being able to refill Omnipods via prescription at my local pharmacy instead of having to invest in some serious hardware and supplies.

I’ve been using mobi since 02/26. I didn’t notice any problems with it. They’ve been testing it commercially since 10/2023. It only cost me 865$ after my insurance covered 80% depending on your insurance you may have better coverage than mine. I’ll be awaiting either Ilet (with glucagon + insulin dual hormone) or tandem sigi patch pump around 2027 or later. Most likely the glucagon will be available soon and the first stage 6 pump (ilet) will become available. Current ilet is stage 5 pump. And all other pumps on the market are stage 4.
