The Sushi Experiment

Today we went for "all you can eat" sushi and it was a success!

Of course I didn't eat all I could eat, but i left full and satisfied and positive that I had done a good job carb counting. So I want to blog what I ate, in case any of you, other sushi lovers, care to try.

Test before meal: 6.5
Test 1.5h after meal 4.4

Sushi rolls (crispy, avocado-sweet potato, salmon, unagi)
9 pieces x 10g carbs = 90g carbs

sushi pieces(salmon, unagi, tuna, snapper)
6 pieces x 8g carbs = 48g carbs

fried tofu, fried scallop
4 pieces x 2g carbs = 8g carbs

chicken tepanyaki, beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki
2-5g carbs (sauces)

green tea ice cream ball
approx 20g carbs

For a total of approx 170g carbs

17 units of humalog :)

Big number but a delicious meal with a sweet result.

I still haven't figured sushi out. I spike to 300-400 without fail every time I eat it (and I only eat about 90g). I'd be curious what your BG was several hours after eating?

My inner Japanese guy is hungry and crying. He'll have to be satisfied with sashimi, though.

There’s something about Japanese food that deceives you into thinking that it has less carbs than there really is. Probably the soy sauce? I love Japanese food but I never managed to get my bg under control afterwards. My I:C ratio is the same. My max bolus though is 10 so I don’t know how that would work out for me. Just curious, how much carbs would you say one California roll has?

Wow, that's a massive number of carbs!

I do fine with a "sushi lunch box" at a large number of sushi places. A california roll + two pieces of sushi + miso soup. It's filling but not a huge amount of carbs and I know exactly how to dose for it.

That is amazing. You didn't mention what your 3 hr mark looked like. At 1.5 hours you still had a lot of insulin floating around the system. I used to give some large does, but anymore I get real nervous giving large amounts of insulin.

Wow! wasn't expecting so many comments lol. Well, when I came back I watched some tv and then went into the garden to do some weeding, so the exercise probably helped my sugars keep stable after the meal, I had to have some juice to keep myself from dropping and when I tested at dinner time I was 4.3

Asma I do Multiple injections, I don't know how this is going to work when I go on the pump. I suspect my Lantus and the light exercise kept me stable afterwards. All I can say is that with what I ate I did not have the spike that everyone talks about.

Tim, how many carbs do you estimate for the lunch box? I love miso soup, yum.

I know is a large amount of carbs... I still find myself really hungry. I guess I have been high for so long that now that I have started to take care of myself my belly does not understand that I'm not supposed to be hungry anymore.

I'm always concerned about bolusing too much at once, even if I have a big meal. My meals are usually under 60g of carbs. If I eat a meal over 10g of carbs, I am reluctant to give too much insulin. My carb to insulin ratio is also 10:1 but I'd probably give 8 or 9 units for a 10+ carb meal and let them run high.

I'm pretty sure sushi rice has some sugar in it. I.e. I think the carb count is higher than plain rice, which is why a lot of us have trouble with it.

What I don't get is how you can eat sushi on MDI. Do you inject >1 time? I never now in advance how many pieces I will eat.... easy to keep blousing on a pump; not so much with shots!

Oh yeah, definitively has some sugar haha, to make the sushi rice "sticky" they use a combination of vinegar and sugar to be able to make those rolls.

Also with Humalog I can inject right after I eat, as long as I don't take a long time eating (back in Spain we used to sit around the table for hours) Once I injected I cannot help hubby with the rest of the sushi, so if we ordered too much he is on his own.

Very interesting subject. I always have a hard time with sushi too so good job! Chris, what kind of meals do you eat that are 10 carbs. It seems that no matter how hard I try my meals seem to be 40 - 80 . Thx
