Type 1 and the MMR vaccine

Recently I was tested to see if I have immunity to mumps, measles, & rubella from childhood vaccines I’d received. Turns out I have no immunity to measles & need to recieve the vaccination again in order to begin a new job. Anyhow, went I went in to get this vaccine there was a waiver I had to go over before I recieved it, stating that I didn’t have any of the following conditions…one of which was diabetes. I couldn’t sign the waiver without the doc’s permission and am now waiting for a phone call from the doc’s office with their response to whether I can get the vaccine or not. In the mean time, I wondered if maybe anyone else has gotten vaccinated when they were type 1 and if there was any concern about receiving the vaccine though you had diabetes. I was diagnosed @ 15 and already had all of the regular vaccines completed.

I haven’t, but I am allergic to the family of drugs that includes Neomycin which is an incredient in MMR. I had an actual anaphylactic reaction, so I can’t get the shot, ever… and that has nothing to do with being diabetic.

I also dont’ have the antibodies… I was tested @ 19 when I was pregnant with my first child, and I was surprised to find that out, since I had gotten an MMR shot about 5 years before (about 2 years before my yucky antibiotic reaction).

I have never seen diabetes listed as a contraindication though… only as a potential adverse reaction (yes, believe it or not!).

I didn’t have a choice but to take the vaccine this past fall or else I would have lost my internship and had to wait another year to get a new one. My internship site required I be vaccinated, no exceptions. My endo and I weighed out the pros and cons because of my mild allergy to eggs, not because of my diabetes. I didn’t even realize I should have checked on the diabetes front. The doc told me I could get it and I did. I got a horrible rash all over my chest that lasted about a week and then that was it. It didn’t affect my sugars and other than itching alot, I was fine.
