Type 1 diabetes poll!

hahaha- best advice ever!

1. 18+ years
2. Yes, DKA at diagnosis. Never since. Let's hope never again, that was nasty.
3. 619 mg/dl at diagnosis. Never been close since. Trying to keep it that way.
4. Never passed out from a low. Trying to keep it that way.
5. Diabetes sucks. Party on! We can live life to the fullest in spite of diabetes.

1.How many years have you had type 1 diabetes?...30 plus
2.Have you ever been in DKA?...No
What was your highest blood glucose?.... 340 at diagnosis ...I visited the GP quickly after I had the typical symptoms ( could call it " I was NOT in denial " )
3.Have you ever passed out from a low? How low were you?.... No , but recall fainting at age 30 or so and not being able to figure out why ???
p4.Your #1 tip for other diabetics...chin up ( even if chin drops sometimes ) , exercise regularly and keep on poking ; get a good support system .

1: 12 and 3/4 years too long
2: Think a very bad hangover is bad?? DKA dwarfs that by 100x times, no fun.
3: a good number of times...
4: Get the most out of your life, theres no telling what surprise this disease may have in store for any of us tomorrow.

1. 15 years
2. yes, Over 600
3. Never passed out from a low, but have been so low that I wasn't able to speak, swallow, or see blood sugar at the time was 40 something. Lowest recorded blood sugar was 7, and when the meter just read lo.
4. Find a doctor who is willing to work with you. not one who's playing the game of "you've been diabetic for how many years and still don't get it"

1. 38 years 4 months
2. never my highest blood sugar was 398
3. Yes I have passed out from a low and I believe I was tested at 23 but I have also tested myself and been 21 and not passed out.
4. Don't try to be perfect. Do the best you can.

1. Had Type 1 for 19 years (diagnosed on my 30th birthday)
2. Been in DKA 3 times. Once I had food borne illness, passed out and paramedics gave me dextrose. Bright. ER read a 1,441.
3. Just twice. Once when I woke up in an ER, my temp was so low that they were treating me for hypothermia. In North Carolina. In August. By BG was 29.
4. The best tip for diabetics is to pace yourself. One BG test at a time, one meal at a time. Second would to learn everything you can.

1. I've had type 1 diabetes for 55 years.
2. Yes. Different times as a child, with different degrees of severity.
Highest bg is unknown.
3. Yes. Lowest bg is unknown.
4. Don't take any wooden nickels.
Much love, hugs and a squeeze back at cha!

1)Been a T1 since 1958. 2)When I was 9 years old I got a stomach bug/flu and ended up in the hospital with DKA. I guess it was 1965 and I have no clue what my blood sugar was. 3)Yes I have passed out several times in the past with blood sugars that were too low. Like others have said there were times it could be in the 20's-30's and I would not be symptomatic, and then could be 40's-low 60's and symptomatic. 4)I used to feel like I was bad when my blood sugar would get a little high. I have learned that diabetes is a roller coaster and all kinds of things can cause the fluctuations. I periodically wonder what life without needles and the ability to eat whatever I want or don't want would be like. But ultimately, my diabetes is mine and I take ownership of it. It has never stopped me from doing things that I, personally, wanted to do.

1.4 years 5 months 2.once when i was diagnosed it was above 28mmol 3.very nearly the other week it was below 2 but my meter wasnt working! 4. Always inject your insulin! And get your eyes checked x

Sort of late here but here goes:

1. 27 years
2. Yes, when I was diagnosed, and one other time about 15 years after being diagnosed.
3. I don't ever pass out no matter what. I had an episode at work from accidentally inujecting Novolog thinking it was Symilin, and I didn't pass out, but I couldn't walk and was disoriented. Paramedics came and checked my blood sugar and it was 13 and that was after eating candy. They said I belonged in Guiness Book of World Records!
4. I wouldn't tell them to be vigilent in keeping blood sugars level, because that's a given and they hear it all the time. I would say the #1 thing about diabetes that is sometimes impossible to control is, depression, anxiety and feeling hopeless. Find support. This website is a good place to start, but even in your hometown, go to a support group. The key to fighting the malaise and discouragement is finding others who share your disease.

1.Just over 26 years, got it when I was 10.
2.No, highest blood glucose was about 21.
3. Yes, twice. Don’t know how low I was the first time, the second I was about 1.6 (newly pregnant at the time)
4.The only thing that you can be sure about diabetes is how unsure it is. It’s always changing, you have to make sure to change with it.

1. Almost 6 and a half years.
2. At least 18 times (in the last 3 1/2 to 4 years) and always with pancreatitis.
Highest was around 560.
3. Never passed out from a low.
4. Stay positive and take it one day at a time.

1. 43 years
2. Yes, prior to blood sugar monitoring and A1C's. I can't remember, probably 600? That's in the 1970's
3. Once I blacked out, but was still talking. I don't think I was ever told my number. I once walked into the lab fasting and they measured me at 13 and my meter said 15.I had driven there.
4. Don't compare yourself to other's. It's good to share information, but all of our bodies are unique.

Much love and hugs for those of you struggling with this daily disease!
YOU ARE A FIGHTER!!!
