The idea of using insulin very early is to prevent the complete death of your own pancreas I was told at a meeting. This would buy time to somehow cope with the insulin resistance.
Metformin works great for some people. I was at a meeting were the only person that lost a great amount of weight was taking metformin. Does not work for me but I am special. Low carb diet immediately makes things better for me 20 units less of insulin with better BG control and much less hunger. Exercise also really lowers the IR. Being overweight limits what you can do. For instance I cannot run without promptly ruining my knees. I bicycle instead and walk a bit. Lift weights.
Byetta I have not tried.
Dear nylram.
Yes diabetes is very expensive in terms of money, mental and physical health.
No it is not your fault that you got it. It is yours for the rest of your life. High BG causes high BP in my case.
You are caught in the insulin, carb, weight gain, … death spiral. Dieting may help for some people but in my case it was a disaster. Not only did I regain the 10 lb I lost but another 10 lb to boot.
Not sure what to do. I am trying a low carb diet I have cut insulin from 75 to 55 units per day, the BG control is better and I DO NOT FEEL HUNGRY.
You cannot use any amount of insulin to make your BG normal if you try you will end up at 500 lb or dead whichever comes first.
It is nice to have Doctor advice but you have the tools fast and slow insulin and metformin to do the job. Try to get the BG close to the normal range and then you dont need the damage control crew. And at the same time loose weight which believe me they have no clue how. Just like our financial advisers have no clue.
Try very low carb and see if you can get BG control, cut insulin and loose weight at the same time. I know sounds like the shoe that is big on the inside and small on the outside or juggling 8 balls. It is. Get good at it, your life depends on success. Best of luck.
