Using xdrip+ with Omnipod 5, Watch OS

I’ve been using xdrip+ with glucodatahandler on Android to get my Dexcom 7 readings on my Galaxy 7 watch face (Watch OS) for a long time. This has worked well with the Omnipod 4 as my insulin pump for many years.

I switched to the Omnipod 5 a month ago, and found that I couldn’t use xdrip with the O5. Pair xdrip with the dexcom, and the O5 would tell me it couldn’t pair with a sensor that was already paired with another device. So I’ve been carrying around the bulky O5 PDM to get glucose readings, and really REALLY missing having my glucose on my watch.

Turns out the solution was very, very simple: The order of pairing devices! If you’ve had the same experience, the good news is you can still use the O5 in closed loop AND connect the Dexcom to xdrip on your phone. With the Android app glucodatahandler, you can then get the data from xdrip (glucose, delta, trend, graph — and IOB and COB if you manually enter boluses and carbs into xdrip), available in watch face complications.

You can already do this with the O5 and Dexcom app on Android, you might say. Well, not on all Android phones. I tend to be a bleeding edge kind of guy, so I have a Galaxy Fold 7, recently upgraded from a Fold 4. The Omnipod 5 app isn’t supported on either, and the Dexcom app isn’t on the Fold 7. There’s no “official” Watch OS solution as far as I know, only Apple Watch. No matter — the complications route is much more flexible anyway.

Here’s what I’ve got showing on my watch:
