Vertigo Treatments?

I posted about this yesterday I think but no one replied. Sorry that this is a repeat. I have vertigo and was given meclazine/dramamine to treat it 3x per day and told not to drive until it resolves. I'm so dopey and out of it from the dramamine that I can't take it except for at night though but I noticed today when it wore off, 24 hours or so, the dizziness seemed to get worse. It gets worse when I move around generally with quick movements, bending down etc. Last night I tried the non drousy otc one but it's just as bad.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had vertigo, what caused it, how did you treat it and how long did it take to go away if it did. This is horrible. My was given another med: cyclobenzaprine for vertigo . He said the dizziness subsided in about 3 days when he started the med and it has never come back. I called the clinic I went to to see if they would rx this instead but they said that drug isn't used for vertigo.

Thanks for your help or ideas...

I had a problem with my ear once and the doctor put something in it and the room started to spin. It was really horrible, so I feel for you. I have talked to a few people that had it here on this site. I hope you get some relief. Do you have it all the time. Don't you get upset when you get medication for something and then find out that it is not even for that problem? It is especially hard when it works and you can't get it again.

Thanks Ellen, Fortunately mine is not constant, it seems to come and go and gets better when I lie down or sit still or read etc. Alot of movement and bending down make it worse. I skipped the dramamine yesterday but I may try that or the cyclobenzaprine now, my brother still had the bottle with some left from several years ago and I have taken that for muscle spasm without problems before except it upsets my stomach a bit. I hate that, lol. I felt better when I woke up today and then when I went downstairs and started making my brunch it started again. My cde said both her mil and her sister also have vertigo and her sister's is so bad she has to sleep sitting up which her meds help her to do. I just hope this goes away soon, I'm having trouble judging my highs/lows due to this too.. I'm just going to hope it will resolve and that it isn't being caused by something serious. So far my family is driving to work because I'm worried I may get really dizzy while driving but fortunately it hasn't gotten that bad yet and I was driving for a few days with it not knowing what was going on, I thought I had a stomach virus because I felt queasy too and had a low appetite. I once had an ear infection as a child where I couldn't keep any food down, it took 3 weeks to get it diagnosed and as soon as the infection was treated I was able to eat again. They also gave me donnatol for the nauseau then. I kind of feel like I'm on a boat, it is horrible isn't it?

my husband had bouts of vertigo that caused him to throw up and not be able to walk for about a week. he had all kinds of tests that showed no cause. he had it for about a week. then it let up, then it ocurred off and on for a bit. and then it disappeared for years before showing up again. his eyeballs looked like they were vibrating. it was years ago and we never really found out what caused it.

maybe his problem and yours is related to what they talk about at this website:

have you seen an ear specialist? hope you feel better.

Diagnosis
To determine why a person feels dizzy, the physician must start by taking a detailed neurological and medical history and performing a physical examination focused on the particular causes of dizziness.
Four questions in particular help with the diagnosis:
How old are you? Certain conditions typically occur at young or old ages: for example, strokes and multisensory dizziness occur in the elderly, while hyperventilation, panic states, and agoraphobia are most common in young women; multiple sclerosis usually affects young adults. Thus, a person’s age suggests some of the most likely explanations for dizziness.
Do you feel as if you’re spinning? True rotational vertigo indicates a disorder of the inner ear or its brain stem connections.
Do you feel as if you’re going to faint? Faintness suggests a cardiovascular cause.
Do you feel unsteady on your feet even though your head is clear? Disequilibrium of this sort is common in patients with neurological disorders affecting balance and coordination.

Please consider this as a possible cause. I have it and it is miserable. I hope you do not, but the good news is it can be fixed with physical manipulation. i found this answer when I saw a neurologist. Thank goodness i did no one else even considered it.

Good luck

Thanks v/prediabetic and Rick, I'm reading these links. This seemed to start after I treated a low of 63 with 10g, then went upstairs, felt ok, I was typing on my laptop and suddenly felt violently dizzy, came downstairs, had a pounding heart and palpitations, drank oj and immediately tested and my bg was 119 range. I didn't think it was a low because if I'm that low to feel that dizzy to the point I will pass out I'm in the 30's or so and I don't come up that quickly. Then I had ketones and felt ill, sick to my stomach and had other gastro symptoms with first low and then higher bg. The next day I think,I was on the phone and suddenly felt very sick/dizzy/ill but not like my brain was shaking/pass out dizzy as on the first event, but I thought I was low and had to get off the phone instead my bg had spiked to 145. By that point I was feeling pretty dizzy on and off, but more like things were spinning and I was floating etc. I had not gone out for 3 days. I went to a clinic where the doc there did a test moving his fingers, the typical neurological test, and he said I had nystagmus and vertigo. I'm guessin this is something to do with my ears since my ears are also ringing.. I have had that symptom since D diagnosis and being on insulin, when my bg goes low especially one warning sign is my ears start ringing. I was planning to go to my ent, who treated me for chronic sinus infections quite a while ago. I also feel pressure in my sinuses and I notice it gets worse going in and out of the cold. I banged my noise on a branch 3 weeks ago so I wonder if that caused this? Rick, did that treatment get rid of yours? I just hope this goes away soon never to return. vpred, I also read this can be caused by migraines, which I've had for years but not as much lately, I have had 2 aura /optical migraines and I get a lot of neuro symptoms with them including light sensitivity, mania, diarrhea etc. I noticed I have also been more light sensitive since this started. I'm glad your husband's went away. Thanks for all of your help.

I'm going to ask the neurologist if my migraine med- imitrex might help this. I have been taking 1/2 the dose of cyclobenzaprine for 2 days now- I'm not sure if it has helped or not, maybe a bit- it also makes me quite dopey, but not as bad as dramamine.

Mee, I agree and I think you should ask for a consult to a neurologist and to an ear specialist. I hope that this is temporary but it sounds very disruptive and painful, especially with the stomach issues. Please keep us posted. I really hope this resolves itself. It may be some infection or mechanical problem in the inner ear. I had ringing in my ears from a medication and that alone was really difficult. Maybe you have an infection.

Thanks Lots/Ellen, I have an appointment with a neurologist but not till feb 16th- they gave me one earlier but I had to teach and didn't know how long it would take etc. Hopefully they will have another opening before then. I'm going to call my ent next week, I hope he is still around, I haven't seen him for years. He used to look at things when I had some inflammation in my vocal cords. Fortunately the stomach issues seems to be better so I'm not sure if they are connected? It's pretty confusing. I felt a bit better yesterday and I went out but then when I was in the stores etc. I started to feel more dizzy again and thought oh no this was a bad idea.. the anxiety of it is maybe the most difficult part, fortunately I'm not in a lot of pain, I am having some pain in my left ear today but he looked at my ears and said they looked ok, no sign of infection etc. I was talking to someone while I was out- she had tons of questions and then I started going low too and had to treat it, I felt so anxious with the dizziness and not knowing for sure what is going on makes it harder to deal with D. The clinic doc I saw said this was caused by a viral infection in the inner ear- I wonder if they can test for this? It really felt migraine like in some ways yesterday because moving around and the sensory input from looking at too many things and bright lights in stores etc. definitely brought on more pronounced symptoms. I have sometimes had migraines started from too much sensory input like that.
