I take novorapid and one time i dropped a whole vial on the floor and my kitchen smelled for days. But as i'm doing it i dont notice the smell but my friends say it smells like old socks.
Does anyone know or remember what untreated animal insulin smells like? I never thought of additives being what I am smelling.
"Untreated animal insulin" at least 30 years ago, had pretty much the same preservatives in it that today's insulins do. m-Cresol is I think the majority of it. I think they've tweaked it some for the analogue insulins (e.g. I think that the animal insulins had phenol in them too, but I don't think Lantus has phenol because it would mess up the more delicate Lantus).
But by no means could I whiff an insulin and tell you whether it's beef-pork NPH vs modern genetically engineered Lantus. Maybe a true insulin connoisseur could but not me.
burned plastic t0ys. h0spitals. it smells like life after diagn0sis. ugh.
Interesting question...as an insulin newbie (since 04/12/12), I thought that it had a very distinctive smell, but I never thought of something by way of comparison to describe the smell. I started with Levemir, which had a strong smell, but have just switched to Lantus and now I don't really notice the smell...
To me it smells like both Hospital and Plaster mixed together.
Yep I do
Tend to agree with u Shanon
I noticed a rubber or I guess Band-Aid like smell also. When I smell it I get a stinging in my skin... hahaha usually because when I smell it is just before an injection.
It's phenol - the same stuff we used to clean folks' bedpans when they had hepatitis, etc.
Insulin smells like hospital to me. A very unique smell, which I'm appreciative of because I know exactly what it is when I smell it and know to check for a bad/leaky pump site.
Insulin. I have smelled it for so long, it smells singularly distinguishable without comparison to any other smell.
There are no feelings attached to it. It is what it is; it smells like what it has been for 50+ years and it saves my life daily.
Novolog and Humalog smell like some sort of weird disinfectant to me. Lantus smells like that plus pee? I'm sorry if that's gross and unusual but it smells like chemicals and pee to me and I kinda get upset if I get it on my hands. Like some weird metallicy smelling disinfectant + pee. That or what you smell when you start a coffee pot maybe? I'm trying to come up with something less gross lol.
I kinda hope I'm not the only one that thinks this but at the same time I think I have found the most unusual insulin smell yet in this thread. Someone please make me feel less alone.
LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
leather :-)
Bandaids and life!
For me it depends on the day! I know it sounds weird, but if I'm having a good day it just smells like water, but on bad days it smells like being shoved into a freshly sterilized hospital room!
The sanitation plant I used to work around occasionally.
Glad I'm not the only one...Eau de Band-aid!
I've thought the exact same thing for years...it smells just like a Band-Aid...I've often wondered if it was some kind of sterilizing additive, but who knows?
Band-Aid for sure!
