What happens when people notice your pod?

I havent had it noticed very often in 4 years, but the times I have I always respond the same way-

"Um...its part of an experimental program by the Navy. I cant really talk about it."

Ive gotten some pretty interesting looks with that :p Of course all my friends already know what it is :)

I am if I ever wear it on my arms. I have a front desk job, so a lot of people see it and ask questions. Most of the time, I just tell them it's my insulin pump. I do paint mine to make them pretty colors though :) I have a pic of it on my profile.

Reading all these responses made my day! I shared them with my 11 year old who is about to start wearing a pod and he said: "It's my GPS device so you can track me if I get lost". I think he might be on to something there!

I've gotten asked what it is more than I'd like. Now I say it's a GPS device so my honey can track me because I tend to lose my way home alot. :)

I’ve had my omniPod for about 6 or 7 years and my 5 year old nephew asks me for the first time a few days ago, “Haywee, how come you always wear DAT white thing?”

I wasn’t sure how on Earth to explain it to a 5 year old. Luckily, I simply stated, “I have to. I’m Diabetic.”

He just said, “Ohh.” and went on his merry way.

xD

I just tell people that it is my external pancrias.

They really say that? Wow.

My daughter paints mine with nail polish. She’s been offered money to paint a follower of mine on Instagram. I never know why mine is going to look like every three days, it’s kinda fun that way!

I've been using the OmniPod for 2 years, and many people have approached and asked about it. I'm always happy that they're curious and bravely come forward to ask a stranger about such a thing. Once, though, my girlfriend and I were in an antique store and the owner asked my girlfriend (I'd gone to pull the car around) what was on my arm. He asked if it was for allergies, which I find kind of hilarious. She, of course, explained the deal to him. He told her that he was very nervous about asking me about it directly, which made me a little sad. I find it nice when people are, like, "What is that thing on you?"

That's good!

The other day....I was at the drive thru at taco bell and the young employee at the window said insulin pump! As he could see it on the back of my arm as it was hanging out the window. He then pulled his shirt up and showed me his ping pump. We chatted for a few minutes and then he told all the other employees to come look at it.....and then he said "see....Its not weird, this guy has one too!"

Another instance of people noticing the pod, I was at work and saw a mother trying to test her son's blood sugar and she didn't get enough blood the first time, he was probably 5 or 6 years old and didn't want to be pricked again (obviously). I went over to him and showed him my insulin pump on my arm and calloused fingers to help him understand its ok and helped his mom to get him to calm down. This had a profound impact on this young person and even the mom....as I am a police officer and was in uniform and all my gear on at the time, he found the pod very cool and the mom was surprised I was able to have the job I have. I said I don't let diabetes slow me down and change the way I would have lived my life otherwise.

you guys are clearly more well-adjusted than I am. I dread this. There's always the conversation that ensues about what were my symptoms and how their grandpa died horribly from complications and blah blah. I usually just say it's an insulin pump and change the subject immediately

"Did you see Iron Man?"

No one has really noticed the pods because of where I wear them, but I'm sure I would answer that it is a "medical device" that gives me insulin. I have had someone ask me what kind of phone I had when I was using the PDM!

Great attitude! I've never let D slow me down either. There's lots of folks out there with much more troubles than I, and many of them don't slow down either. Like a young girl in the Taekwondo class my daughter takes. She's almost blind, can only see out of the sides of her eyes (not a good explanation, but it'll work). But she's already a red belt, and working toward a black belt.

Wear it on the side of your butt cheek, you will never notice it and you can wear it with a swimsuit and no one will notice

Sometimes I say somthing silly then say just kidding and tell them it’s an insulin pump. Most times I just say insulin pump. I do see lots of people looking but then they don’t ask. I like for people to ask. I had one lady ask if I had cancer lol She thought it was chemo or something. I have also had someone say oh you quit smoking

The new Apple iPancreas.

Well in theory you could do this with the existing pod. There's nothing preventing it, save maybe viscosity.

As long as the liquid in it is about the same viscosity, and no issues with precipitation or anything, the existing pod can act as a delivery device. Conversion calcs are simple: 1U of U100 = 0.01 ml = 0.01 cc.

Set delivery as needed.

This whole thing is rather humorous to me... I had an ex coworker ask me about it, and after I explained what it was, his first thought was how he could put some THC in it (psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) so he could dose himself all day.

Set off all sorts of hilarious scenarios in my head!

I told him it would never work, purified THC is a thick oil, and would never work. He said no problem, he'd just dilute it with ethanol, which is apparently is a solvent for THC.

Problem for him is he's not diabetic, so would have a tough time getting pods and a PDM. I'm not giving him any of mine!

So, I guess this will remain a thought experiment for now... :-)
