What to put on a new tattoo to help it heal properly?

Hello everyone!

I haven’t gotten tattooed since I got my D under control. In the past, I had really poor healing experiences with all of my tats because my blood sugar was out of control. So now that I am in good health, I am ready to get more ink. I have a design ready and a date set. I was wondering what you guys use on the tattoo the first few days or week that you have it to help it heal. Many tattoo artists suggest using Neosporin which I am allergic to. My friend uses A&D diaper rash cream on his when they are new. I have also heard of people using hypo allergenic lotion on it to keep it from getting too dry and scabby. I have really sensitive skin so I am not sure what the best option is. The last thing I want is a rash on top of a new tattoo (which has happened to me with my first tattoo many years ago)!

What has worked for you guys? This is going to by a special tattoo in homage to my change in lifestyle and care of my diabetes. I want it to heal well and look fabulous so I figured I would start doing some research now since I won’t be getting it till June…

I got my tattoo a few days back and I use Bach Rescue Cream. Worked a treat so far! And I believe it says it works for sensitive skin to.

I remember using Savlon, what a long time ago now, lol.

Hey i used the good ole bacitration ??? works fine good luck…

So it sounds like as long as I keep it moisturized I should be OK…thanks everyone!

Yea and when you shower remeber to cover it in vaselin! And don’t knocked it around while its healiing =).

All I used on my piece of artwork was what was recommended by the tattoo artist - called Glysomed (fragrance free hand cream). I’m like you slightly allergic to stuff - and this one didn’t cause any reaction to me. My tat healed very nicely with applying this on a few times a day.

Vaseline wasn’t recommended to me - I forgot the reason why she said it shouldn’t be used - but she advised against it - perhaps because of my having diabetes (her Dad is a diabetic - and she had done artwork on him over the years). Check out this link for more advise (video has Pat Fisher in it - I have a piece of her artwork on me - unfortunately not done by this great lady - couldn’t afford the airfare to California - but you can buy her designs online - my artist tweaked mine abit differently for me ).
Also, antibacterial cream can sometimes leech out the colours of your new tattoo.

I was told vaseline pulls the ink out…maybe that is why they said to avoid it…I actually looked at this video the other day, great minds must think alike

My artist told me to use A&D ointment. And it healed fine.
Mine is on my lower abdomen and she also told me not to wear underpants for a week, and I didn’t know if she was kidding or not (probably got a big kick out of seeing the color drain from my face…) Well, no way was I gonna walk around not fully dressed. So I just put a big gauze pad over it during the day, got dressed, and it healed fine.

Ohhh Hmmm, don’t think I’ll be using vaseline next time! Thankfully the ink never came out!
