A week ago my truck was broken into in the evening while at work, and my Adorn laptop/attache/diabetes bag was stolen.
$2,000 worth of stuff. Omnipod PDM, 2 pods, 1 G4 sensor, full 10ml vial of Humlog, TF300T tablet with attached keyboard, backup Freestyle meter, some important tax documents, and a bunch of other stuff.
Had to return to MDI can careful record-keeping for two days.
I did not like it (deliberately understating my experience :-)).
With all the guff Insulet has (deservedly) had heaped on them for the customer service problems during the new pod rollout, I feel compelled to give them some props for exceptional customer service on this one.
Called them the following (Friday) morning to get a new PDM, expecting to pay $500 for it (and lose some weight not eating for a few weeks :-)).
They replaced it free of charge upon submission of the Police Report later that morning. I had my new PDM Saturday, and was happily pumping away.
I'm glad you were able to get a lot of the diabetes related fallout sorted out. I get stressed out when I forget my PDM at home or work, or my pod supply falls below 10. I'm not sure I could handle losing that much diabetes stuff all at once without going all fetal position on the floor. I'm not sure what I would do if that much stuff was stolen by some scumbag.
fortunately I filed a Police Report immediately, and had a very good list in my head what was in there. It was absolutely top-notch of Insulet to replace my PDM no-charge, and overnight -- they had no obligation to do that.
The rest of the stuff will be covered by auto-insurance (after deductible). My new replacement bag just arrived today, so I'm well on my way to being whole again.
Still, going back to MDI and the OnTrack android app again for even just 48 hours was excruciating
That's terrible- I'm sorry to hear that too. I once thought my bag with my insulin was stolen and panicked a bit, but I know I always have more supplies at home etc.I think the tax documents would really worry me due to identity theft etc. Everything else is replaceable stuff, fortunately you had your mdi supplies too. I wonder if pumps etc. can be put on home owners insurance also? I know laptops can, I have been meaning to put my laptop on for a while incase it is stolen.
Yeah, the docs are what are really giving me heartburn. We're members of LifeLock, called them, so they're on the watch. Doesn't kill the anxiety, though.
Fortunately, it was most likely taken by one of the homeless that inhabit a camp in the woods behind our industrial park, most of them drug addicted (no judgement baggage coming from me on this, just sharing the facts), so I'm hoping everything diabetes and the docs were simply discarded.
As for the MDI stuff, that was serendipitous... I've been haranging people here for months to go get their 5 free humalog pens via Lilly's intro offer; I'd done so myself, and had them sitting in the fridge. Also had two Lantus pens left over from when I switched to the omnipod three months ago.
Not so sure they're making a killing... PODD (Insulet) is still operating at a loss. So they're losing money on us, not making it.
The main reason our supplies cost so much is twofold: 1), we're a relatively small market, so economies of scale don't work as well to drive prices down; 2) heavy regulation makes it incredibly expensive to get a product approved for sale. This must be amortized into the price over the expected life of the product.
That's why a device that is less technically complex than a free cellphone costs $500, and Insulet still loses money.
