Why is Walgreens selling Contour USB for $9.99?!?!

I was in Walgreens yesterday for something absolutley unrelated to D and saw this while I was wandering around the store. I had to do a double take and then got skeptical that it was marked wrong. But the details checked out. I use the regular Contour so I have a load of strips that are compatible. Thought I would pick it up "just in case" it was really a good deal. I just didnt want another meter laying around, unused.

Does anyone know why there are clearancing them? Have there been accuracy issues? Will they no longer be supporting the software? Or will they be coming out with a new version of the meter or the software since Windows has issued Vistas?

I did some searching and havent found anything on the web or here in the forum. I asked the pharmacist at WG and she didnt know either.

Does someone know more about this?? Thanks.

I don't know, but have you signed up for the bayer simple saver card? My co pay for this test strip is going to go to the highest tier this year, I'm curious how much the card will help.

It's not a clearance sale. It's just a sale. Even Bayer is giving them away for free right now, on their site. This is often what happens with some new, fancy meters... They skyrocket, and once they get popular, they start getting cheap, or free... Usually to reel people in... Heck, I got mine with a coupon for $35 (when Walgreens had them for $29.99) and got mine and my husband's for free, too.

Meter companies love to give meters away because they make the most money from their strips. They can sometimes be stingy with the 'higher end' meters but they'll do it when they think it will encourage people to switch over. Benefit while you can:)

CVS has the meter for the same price plus a 20% off coupon, which makes it only $8 plus shipping if you order it online. Store availability would save the shipping if you are close by to one. I figure it wouldn't hurt to try.

Walgreens does the same with the OneTouch UltraMini all the time. Plus meter companies will just give them away free if you ask for one anyway. They make their money from the strips, and want you to get the meter so you’re forced to use their strips!

Thank you all for your input. I went and got two of them, one for regular use and the other as a back up. I am enjoying the software for tracking your numbers. Now if they would invent a way to let you enter how many carbs you are eating and how much insulin you are injecting…

Hello Christina:

You might consider using any of the other slots of/for information which the software program allows for one of those pieces of information. I’ve not read the manual yet, nor hooked mine up. Interesting…

But thanks for the heads up… sounds like I need to make a trip asap. Can never have enough meters -rofl-
