Your A1C

6.7- July 9, 2008 from 7.4 last May 08…

5.4 on June 11th

4.9 for the last two tests. My next one is at the end of this month.

Whoa-oa-oa! Aubrey! Are you T1 or 2? Insulin or no? Pump or MDI? Talk to us!

10 as of January of last year (aka pre-pump) … got the pump the very next month and my A1C went down to 7.5 by September that year… unfortunately Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and my birthday all happened. Wouldn’t you know they all come with tasty good food!?! So I went up to 7.6, that said my goal for this September is to shoot for a 7! It’s lofty but I am up for the challenge!

I’ll let you know what happens…

Type 2
9.3 at diagnosis
5.8 now

T2, Byetta only, oh and a lot of attention to diet.

4.9 and that requires a lot of hard work because I am a T1 and have had diabetes for soon 47 years. For me the insulin pump has made a HUGE difference. Without it I could not achieve control so I consistently gave up. Good control leads to better control. If I have to give any advice it is that diabetes is a VERY individual disease. You have to learn to know what works for your own body. We all react differently so it is very hard to advise people on what to do. Doctors can only help a bit, then it is up to us! And it is possible. Before my pump I had really bad, bad control. I have seen both ends of the scale. If I can turn it around, so can anybody else. I am dam proud of my HbA1c because it is HARD to achieveI

Wow there are some fantastic results here!

I’ve been quite happy with mine over the last year or two - I tend to sit between 6.1 and 6.3. The last one was 6.4 and that annoyed me for a moment until I slapped myself around a bit… hehe. (sheesh, it could have been a lot worse!)

I’d still love to be under 6. That’s my aim. And maybe this time I’ll do it? I’ve had some great numbers over the last month or more so my fingers are crossed really tight. Another 6 weeks til I go for the test though!

Mine was 6.0%. My doctor was ticked off.

8.4, yeah it sux but I’m going to improve on it.

Good for you, Flo.

The last one was 5.9. Normally it never goes more than 6.
Take care, Ale x

My last was 7.5. Just started on the OmniPod pump, so I’m hoping to get it down the next time it is checked.

5.8 on June 10. T2/diabesity. Diagnosed 07/2002. Diet-and-exercise only since 01/2004. Based on the new numbers out of ADA (and previous numbers when I was at a lower weight), I have a ways further to go (new goal should be below 5.0, and I’ve been there on d&e).

My last one at the end of June was 6.4. This was the lowest it may have ever been since being diagnosed when I was 5!! The one 3 months prior to that was 7.5 … I was between that and 7.8 after going on the pump and I finally got it down. Now I’m really scared to get my next one done is September! How on earth do all of you keep it at 6 or even under???

There are a number of issues that affect your blood glucose level and your A1C. Some of these include appropriate use of correct insulins, dietary changes, and exercise. (Those are the things you can affect.) Others include life stresses, hormonal changes, and “which way the wind blows at 9PM on the first Thursday after the full moon”.)

Let’s forget about the things you cannot change: you can’t change them, and worrying about them is only going to add stress to your life.

For the most part, this leaves insulin use, diet, and exercise. The information you need to make appropriate adjustments will be found in your blood glucose tests, your food intake logs, and your exercise logs (you will need to commit to keeping an ongoing, detailed log). You may find, for example, that you may need to tweak your overnight basals – or that you need to bolus differently for 30 g carb (or net-carb) worth of baked potato than for 30 g carb (or net-carb) of raw carrots. In addition, you may find you react differently to walking 30 minutes at 4 mph at 9AM than you do at 5PM – or for that matter, between running 200 calories’ worth and biking the same, or between twenty minutes cardio and the same amount of weight training – and you may need to either bolus, or add carbs, differently to adjust.

The initial (and periodic) investments of time needed to tweak everything may seem daunting, but what you are looking to establish is “tight control”: as few excursions above 140 (or below 80) as possible, for as short a period of time as possible.
