3 day old Pumper :)

Hi Everyone.. I'm new to the site and new to pumping as well. Just did my pump start for the Animas Ping 3 days ago. Still getting used to being attached to something 24/7. How long did it take you to get comfortable with wearing the pump?

My main challenge right now is sleeping... I can't seem to find a comfortable place to put the pump: If I wear it on me, I'm conscious of it; If I put it on the bed, it tugs on the infusion site when I toss and turn (which wakes me up). Any ideas?

It took me a few weeks to really get used to it. I do the same as Roger, just clip it on my shorts on the front somewhere, that way I'm good with either side and my back. It works well because I never sleep on my stomach.

I currently use a pocket that I added to a night shirt. But in the past, I have used a light weight 'travel belt', often referred to as security travel/waist belt.

Here's an example on amazon.
link waist belt

I have occasionally used a SPI belt (found on-line), but I prefer the softer and smaller buckle size on the travel belts. The belt also comes in handy during Dr appts/medical exams or hospital stays !

Thanks :) I will try that out and see how it goes...

I might try one of the bands.. I tried hooking it to my PJ pants, but it still bothered me (I guess I could feel the weight of it).

Thanks for the tips.

I have the animas ping, too, and I love it. I make sure I get the longest tubing I can (I think it's 43 inches?), and then I put the pump under my pillow and can roll over as much as I want without the tubing getting much in the way. I think maybe about once a week I get tangled in the tubing, but it's never pulled out of my site, or hurt or anything like that. And I move about a TON in my sleep! Good luck! You'll get used to it soon and figure out what works best for you!

I use a Waist-It, it's a soft belt with a pocket for the pump, if you have it loosely around your waist it moves with you as you turn over in bed, & I've never had problems with the tubing getting tangled around me, even though I move around a lot in my sleep. During the day I use a Spi-Belt but I find the buckle too hard for using in bed.

It didn't take me long to figure out the best setting for sleep. Clipping it to the waist band of my PJs was never an option. I just don't feel comfortable with it digging into my stomach. So it floats around. I had trouble, same as you, with my pump tugging when I turn over. What I recommend you do is try a tubing that's longer. I like 23" for abdomen sites but it does bother me sometimes when sleeping. With 43" I don't run out of tubing and, more or less, can toss and turn as much as I want. Granted, you'll have tubing winding around your waist but you can easily resolve that. When I run out of tubing? I simply pick my pump up when I turn and place it in front of me. I hear others place it under their pillows. Some even designed a pillow with a pocket for the pump. Issue of tugging still stands though. Hope this helps.

I use the clip and clip it to my shorts too. I usually put it between where my leg and body connect as it sits nicer in the groove. I got used to it pretty quickly. I started hanging out in the DOC when I got my pump (2008) too!

Congrats on the pump! I have a Ping as well - love it ;)

Men's sleep shorts are really comfy and usually have deep pockets; so do scrub pants. I really like the TummieTote bands from Tallygear. Super comfy, no extra bulk, no buckle. Try a few different things ;)

I just throw it next to me in the bed and don’t notice it at all. I have the 43" tubing so that probably helps and I rarely find that it gets wrapped around me, even though I toss and turn a lot! I think it would make me crazy to have it clipped to me all night long, but you’ll find something that works for you and pretty soon, you won’t give it another thought

I wear a Ping. too. I use the 43 inch tube length and just let the pump migrate where it will as I go through a night moving from side to side. It usually lies on the bed a few inches from my abdomen. The pump rarely gets wound around me and if it does, I just unwind it.

I've never had one pull a site out and I've been sleeping with a pump for 26 years. I'm so used to it, I don't really wake up when attending to moving it around. I just do it while I'm in that half-conscious zone in between asleep and awake .

The title of your post made me wonder if you had three-day old baby on a pump!

I also clip my pump to my shorts at night but I clip it with the pump on the inside of the waistband that way its secure and not flopping around. I clip it just to the left of the center line on my stomach.

I have the Animas Ping also and I clip it to the front of my shorts or sleep pants. I clip it in the center of my clothes, this way when I roll, it doesn't pull or tug. I also rotate my sides (infusion sites) I do 3 on my left and 3 on my right. Only one time have I almost pulled out my infusion site cause I didn't clip it to my clothes. I have been on the pump since June and found that it does take time to get used to it, especially at night, but it should get easier with time.

I have been a pumper for 14 years. I always have nightshirts with a chest pocket, and that is where my pump is at night. Sometimes a pocket on a nightshirt is hard to find, bought 2 at Kohl's this summer.
