ALARMING FIGURES: Up to 40 percent of children in Qatar have diabetes.

As many as 40 percent of children in Qatar are suffering from diabetes with the number of new sufferers increasing each year, a new study has found.

Dr Abdullah Al Hamaq, executive director of Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), said globally 500,000 children under the age of 15 had type 1 diabetes, while in Qatar 40 percent of children were suffering from diabetes 1 and 2, Qatar daily The Peninsula reported on Sunday.

“Lifestyle is the main reason for this alarming rise of childhood diabetes,” Sharoud A Matthis, programme manager of QDA told the newspaper. "Unhealthy food habits, less exercise and also sometimes presence of a genetic factor all propel diabetes in the young.”

An international three-day conference to address the problem of diabetes and obesity in children has been organised by the QDA in collaboration with Detroit Medical Centre, Children’s Hospital of Michigan (USA) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) from Oct. 10 to 12 at the Doha Sheraton Hotel.

Once again, Type 1, which has nothing to do with lifestyle, is lumped in with a disease for which lifestyle is a major factor.

Fail.

Hi Jason ;

don’t agree ; when they mention lifestyle here ; they may refer to the fact lack of exercise in general ; marriage within cousins and relatives which will increase inheritage issues…etc… they are also referring to the major type 2 diabetics which frequently here effect very young children as well… additionally bad lifestyle & nutrition habits have very bad influence for type 1 diabetics as well… with results in high Hba1cs etcc

Obesity is not a causal factor for Type 1 diabetes. Yes, good nutrition and exercise are important for good care of Type 1 diabetes, but poor nutrition and lack of exercise do not cause Type 1.

PLEASE DONT MISS UNDERSTAND THE ARTICLE ABOVE
They are reffering to TYPE 2 DIABETES IN CHILDREN !
THERE WAS A RECENT STUDY THAT MORE AND MORE CHILDREN ( WHICH ARE OBESE DUE TO THE LIFESTYLE & EATING HABITS HERE IN THE UAE ) GET A TYPE 2 DIABETES.
THE TYPE 1 DIABETES IN CHILDREN IS CAUSED THROUGH INHERITAGE ISSUES ( MOST MARRIAGES ARE BETWEEN COUSINS & RELATIVES WHICH ALSO HAVE DIABETES) IF THE DIABETES IN THOSE INDIVIDUALS IS POORLY CONTROLLED ; OF COURSE THERE IS A MAJOR RISK / THREAT FOR THE NEW BORN BABY…
