I am 36 yrs old and I have been a diabetic for over 20 yrs. My life as a diabetic has been a lot of ups and downs over the years but now I am finally having a few more ups. At age 20 I became pregnant with my son Daniel. When I was 4 weeks I found out that he had some heart problems that would call for surgery after he was born. I chose not to terminate the pregnancy against my family’s wishes. Throughout my pregnancy I had NO support for anything and I did the best I could self managing my diabetes. My son lived for exactly 18 mnths until the day of his heart surgery, which he never woke up from. I found out later that the specific birth defects he had were simliar to 3 other children in the father’s family who had also passed. I’m sure my less then perfect control didn’t help but it wasn’t the main cause. I miss my son every day and now after one failed marriage and countless years of swearing I would never try again I have found the perfect man in my life. I am in the process of getting referred to the local Joslin Diabetes Center here in Ohio for my total diabetes care and hopefully after a few months my A1C level will be down to where it should be to try to have a baby.
I am currently on the MM 722 pump and I really wish I had had it years ago. I went from being a brittle hard to control diabetic (according to my doctors) to more controlled (but not perfect yet) person with diabetes. Through this site and DiabeticMommy.Com I hope to gain the friends and knowledge needed to make my way down the babydust trail soon.
