Well I finally succumbed - bought a smart phone (which is a lot smarter than I am - still learning) Anyway, I did it because I was in a restaurant and it was too dark to read my Calorie King Book. Well, Calorie King doesn't have an app. My question to you experts - which is the best app for nutritional info?
I've found the best to be MyfitnessPal. I've tried a few and prefer this one. I can easily find almost anything I type into the search window. It gives a complete nutritional make up and you can also keep tabs on your daily calories and vitamins and exercise.
As background, I was on call 24/7 before I retired. So after I stopped working, I told no one- absolutely no one my cell phone number. As I stated above, the main reason for going ahead and entering the 21st century was to access nutrition info without carrying a book with me. I am so clueless, I had to call my mobile company and ask if my phone was an android!?!?!? I googled nutrition apps, and of course I had to chose between android and others. The nice person at the phone store remember me and asked what I wanted to do. When I told him I wanted an app for nutrition - he surprised me by telling me that there is one already in the phone. Who woulda thunk. Anyway, thanks for your input and now I'll have two to choose from. At least I can laugh at myself.
I like an app called "Lose It!" (I had to put in the exclamation point to find it...) more than Myfitnesspal which seems to be more popular. To my eye, most of the portions on Lose It! are more clearly related to the food than the ones on MFP (it will allow some shifting between cups and ounces of some foods, which is handy if you don't have a scale, etc.) and I like the interface more, which increases my chances of using it successfully. I love having the app to check weird food and I think it's improved my carb counting quite a bit. I also looked at the "deluxe" ($2.99!) version once and noted that it had recording BG as a feature, which might be handy.
I don't use a nutritional app, but I love using my IBG star meter and app on my iPhone. It makes my life, managing this 24/7 grind a lot easier. The app is free and you can use it even if you don't use that meter, but you would have to add in the bg record yourself. I think there are other good bg management apps out there too, most are free. I'm not sure if there is a non iPhone version of the ibg app though.
