Carnation Instant Breakfast

I am newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and am trying to muddle my way through what I can eat until I see the dietitian but in the meantime, I am trying to determine if I can have Carnation Instant Breakfast or SlimFast powder shakes on the mornings when I just have run out of time and need a quick on the go breakfast.

Glad to have found all of you, there is sooooo much to learn.

Hi Norma
A lot of us use shakes for a quick meal. You just need to read the nutrition label on the back and see how much sugar or how many carbs it contains. And remember that the milk you would use to mix it in has carbs too. So don’t forget to add that to your total There are also shakes already mixed and in little cartons that have the total carbs at a very low level. These usually have a good level of protein and some of them taste really good too. Atkins has a good one too in a little carton that is handy to grab on the way out the door. All you need is a straw and you are good to go. My favorite there is the dark chocolate, but they have a milk chocolate too. I usually keep a few of these in my fridge, Knowing they are there always gives me something to count on even when I have to sit and wait for an appointment and it runs over into when you need to eat.
And i am glad you found us too. Welcome to the family…

Norma-

I agree with Saundra. You have to read the labels, count the carb content (including milk). Test your blood sugar after you drink the shake if it’s good, why not enjoy it?

Cherise

They are both fairly high in carbs and alcohol sugars. But you can get flavored whey protein powder or there is and I like the best egg white protein powder in flavors. 30grms of protein and 6 carbs. they have been a life saver for me.

If I have to use this option, I also look at the Glucerna products. I eat their cereal, and my sugar is fine afterward - the only cereal that I can eat with that result. They have meal replacement bars and shakes also.

Norma I just thought of something else you can do about the carbs in milk. There is a product called almond milk that can be used in place of regular milk and it is very low in carbs. It comes in regular and also vanilla flavors.and I think it tastes pretty good too. If you are going to be using powders for mixing you may want to cut carbs any place you can. If you are not going to be using the powder for extended periods of time a ready made shake in a little carton makes a lot of sense. I keep a package of them just for this purpose. But if you find you can make the carb count work for you and find you like the ease of a shake for a meal replacement, then you might want to invest in a larger package of the powder. It really depends on what you can get to work for you. Best of luck to you.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and recommendations. I do have a couple of questions.

Sandra Burke, you suggested flavored whey protein powder and best egg white protein powder in flavors.

What brand whey protein powder do you recommend, especially to a newbie to protein powders such as me. Also where do you purchase the flavored whey and egg white powders?

Are the whey and egg powders mixed with water or milk?

Again, thanks to everyone for all the different suggestions.
