Good morning! I was wondering if anyone else wears contacts? I have worn extended wear contacts for a few years now, and have never had any troubles. Recently, I have been feeling weird when I put them in and wonder if there is a connection? When diagnosed, I went to my doctor and had a new eye exam done. He said my eyes are healthy and that my prescription hasn’t changed, so he doesn’t think the diabetes is affecting my ability to wear contacts. Anyone else have thoughts on this? Thanks!!! Chris.
I wear Toric lenses and I also am a pumper.
every once and a while I do have a problem with my lenses - however it is more related to dryness
during an exam they recommended the following item:
Blink for Contacts In addition to the blink, I also take the fish oil extract pills. Are you having a problem with them sliding or just feeling extremely dry?
I wear disposable contacts. I have no problem with them, except for dryness when they are in to long. I don’t believe that has anything to do with the D. I have been wearing contacts for 20yrs, so I take turns with my glasses and contacts only because I can’t wear them as long as I use to.
Chris-
Hello! I have never experienced any problems with contact’s. I wear extended wear contacts and I didn’t have an issue. I do switchout my contactes every other year…I wear glasses all year and the following year I wear contacts:) I like to give my eyes a break.
Cherise
Same here, Preta. Disposables and minor dryness. To combat the dryness, I use refresh drops and changed to clearcare solution. Also had tear duct plugs put in in my lower ducts. But no contact-related vision issues.
Chris, do you know what your blood sugars run when you’re experiencing this issue?
I wear disposable lenses too and have not had any problems. I sometimes have blurred vision related to diabetes if my sugar levels are too high, but unfortunately that has nothing to do with my contacts.
I though about getting Lasik, but I decided against it because of diabetes and the increased rick of complications. Anyone else?
Hey Chris,
I wear Acu-vue Oaysis lenses. I have worn them for about 3 years. They are the first contacts I tried, and the only ones I use. My prescription is pretty low. -1.00 and -1.50. When I used to wear them, they were great. About 2 months after my diagnosis in January 2008 I my vision seemed worse, but my OD said that I had an astigmatism. I just use regular ones still, but now my contacts feel like there is stuff on them, and they dry easier. I don’t know if it is just my mind, or something is connecting?
I just remembered that after getting out of the hospital I had 20/20 VISION! I thought my bad eyesight was CURED! I didn’t need glasses or contacts to see ANYTHING. This lasted for about 2 weeks, and after that, my vision worsened to what it still is now… that was really disappointing. Has anyone else experienced this?
Not sure what may be going on, there. I have worn contacts for a few years and not really had too much trouble other than my astigmatism amount changes with how well (or bad) my diabetes is controlled. I was just fitted this week with RGP lenses to help my eye keep shape better. Other than that, everything else pretty much stays the same.
Have you thought to check your sugar before inserting your contacts? I know this is an off-the-wall subject, but I have problems in the morning with my contacts if it’s off balance. Just a thought…
Does anyone know why almost every site that explains things about contact lenses say that they are “not suitable for people with chronic conditions, i.e. diabetes”? This kinda ticks me off because there are lots of diabetics that wear them, so why are they not recommended for us? I even asked my contact lens doc and he said it’s not a problem.
