i totally miss red wine. is that random? i just decided to give it up a couple of weeks ago because i was finding it super impossible to correct for without going high or low. not drinking it has straightened out my sugars fabulously, so it seems worth it. but everytime i look at my wine rack, i feel sad. has anyone figured out how to have a glass or two of red without your sugars whacking out?
Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream–my all-time favorite. I’ll have a scoop once a month and cut back on my carbs during the rest of the day…it’s too good for me to miss!
I’ve tried a 3/4 red wine to 1/4 seltzer water mixture during the summer. It works pretty well with Zinfadels/Syrahs, but unfortunately it doesn’t work with the darker wines like Merlots (which are my favorite!) Or I’ll have a small glass after a really hard workout which seems to help my sugars avoid the whole skyrocketing thing. Hope this helps!
Well, when I was diagnosed back in 91, there was so many foods that were taboo to us!! Haha. Well, through the years, there have been so many changes to meal planning and carb exchanges that having Diabetes isn’t that big of a deal. I still eat cake, and chocolate and ice cream, and all of that crazy stuff. Its all in moderation, and of course, checking the blood sugar before. I think being on the pump has helped a TON!!! Actually, it has helped. I know it has. OK, I had to get my two cents in. Peace out!
Haribo gummies - As good as I’ve gotten at compensating for sweets and such, they’re just too dense with sugar for me to eat. It’s a huge shame, since they’re pretty much my favorite consumable thing in the whole world.
Stewart’s Key Lime Soda - My favorite drink, and one of the varieties of Stewart’s that aren’t made in diet form.
i love haribo gummies too! those little dense sugary disks. i like the pink and clear coloured
ones best but seriously they’re way to sugary to even think of consuming. i agree.

Have you tried Chocoperfection Bars. You can get them on the net and my local grocer carries them as well. Admittedly, it’s small specialty type grocer. Anyway, I find them amazing and they don’t have the horrid laxative effect.

Pizza. Last time I ate pizza my sugar was so high it wouldn’t register. I swore off of pizza for good.
I eat chocolate pretty frequently. I used to buy the bags of minis, but found that I’d eat far too many of those. Now I just buy regular size packs (not king-size!) - like the ones at the supermarket check-out - and keep those in the fridge. A pack of Reese’s Cups is only 23g.
i probably eat less Chinese than I’d like, but that’s generally not good for anyone, so I’m better off. If I crave Asian, we get Japanese. A big platter of sashimi is very low carb. I like the big bowls of soba too, but I have yet to bolus accurately for that. I’ll keep trying though 'cause eventually I’ll get it, just like I have a pretty good handle on pizza now.
We eat at this one Chinese buffet here in town and I have the art of bolusing for chinese down pat. I can end up in the 120’s 3 hours after chinese now. Just wish I could do it for pizza.
Stacy’s has delish frozen organic pizzas made with whole wheat crust…
The only pizza I will eat is a lobster pizza at Red Lobster. It is basically a flour tortilla shell with a white sauce. It is one of my favorites. Store bought pizza doesn’t affect me as bad, but I still stay away from it.
The only artificial sweetener I will eat is splenda. It is the only one that doesn’t spike my sugar. The others spike my sugar worse than regular sugar does.
I miss chocolate, too! Not just eating it, but pigging out on chocolate:) If I eat the 85% cocoa chocoloate bars, it doesn’t effect me too badly, but I can only eat a small amount. I want to devour the whole thing. Stevia’s the only sugar substitute that works for me. I’m from NYC where egg creams are popular. Though no one adds egg yolk anymore, the name has stuck. It’s easier to make this low carb & yummy. It satisfies (some) my chocolate cravings. Put a tablespoon of pure cocoa (unsweetened) in a tall glass, add a couple tablespoons of heavy cream, some stevia & stir well. Pour in seltzer water (better than club soda–it has no salt). Trick is to pour the seltzer off the spoon as your pour it into the glass. This makes it really bubbly. Has just 4 carbs.
I miss pizza even more. No matter what I’ve tried, pizza sends me soaring. Really miss pasta, too.
I miss SLURPEES! have the odd sip or two but have no idea of how many carbs in them so don’t even bother.
the first year after our son was diagnosed i really tried to make all these things that we longed for to eat myself but in a way that wouldnt cost any insulin…it wasn´t a hit i can say : -)
But you learn from your mistakes, and we decided to adapt to our new situation instead and now we dont miss out on anything. We eat anything we want -whenever we want -and compensate with insulin - just like our bodies normally would do. It´s not the same as to say that we only eat “bad” food. We eat good homecooked meals mostly , lots of fruit and vegetables a.s.o - but when we feel like having a snack :we have a snack. Once or twice a week the kids get candy/sweets or popcorn or chips…just like normal functioning familys do and have it.
In this family we´re only diabetic when we treat ourselves the way other people want to treat us ; “dont do this”," dont do that", “can you really eat this”, “can he really do that” bla bla bla…We live here and now ,and use insulin to make it through the day - just like all others.
In Sweden , especially if you have young children with diabetes, they´re strongly point out the importance of beeing able to feel that you are just like everyone else - food and everything around it is one piece of that puzzle - that´s how i see it, anyway. It was more difficult with shots i admit, but since we started pumping a couple of years ago no form of food or snacks is a problem for us…I feel “sorry” for you though cuase i´d really hate to miss out on choclate myself!

Keep a bag of Dove Dark Chocolate squares in my desk drawer. I can have 3 of those pieces for only about 15 -20 g of carbs. Fits right in to my afternoon snack carb count. Don’t do it very often, but nice to have once every couple of weeks.
I was born and raised in New York - just outside the city and I totally forgot about an egg cream! Thanks for the reminder.

Mr. Pibb.
I really miss Mr. Pibb. It is not easy to get in Ohio, so kicking the habit wasn’t so hard, but I still long for it!!!
I miss carnaval food. The frozen chocolate covered bananas, cotton candy, elephant ears, snow cones and the rest of the junk.
It’s something I only got once a year (not everything) when we go to the carnaval. It’s part of my childhood memoriesNow when I take my little girl I can’t share that part with her!
