I found a chocolate milk w/no added sugar that comes in at 17gram/cup. I use that to treat my nighttime lows when they occur and I savor it, sip by sip. That does it for me. I’m currently on a “strawberry” binge. I take a cup of fresh, sliced strawberries, add granulated sucralose and some half and half. I only have to cover this with a small dose of insulin, easily administered via pump. I think w/o the pump, I probably wouldn’t treat myself to these little pleasures…
Unfortunatly I’m a Type 2 so I can’t bolus when I eat the wrong things. So I have to stay away from chocolate. But what I miss the most is Chinese food. That raises my sugar immensly. But then a typical take out order for me was egg rolls, crab rangoon, vegetable fried rice and some kind of shrimp dish. Like shrimp kow. Haven’t had chinese food in a long, long time.
I love choclate but don’t have it too much. I think as long
as we count the carbs in foods, we can have almost everything
in moderation. We just have to find out how the food is
digested in each of us. That is easier said than done, it’s
been years with diabetes and I still can’t find the right
timing or amount of insulin on some foods using the Dual Wave Bolus.
I feel that everytime is not the same as the time before,
There is much to take into consideration. That’s what makes
Diabetes so much fun.
LOL - I’m just reading this thread now - and it was started up back in 2007 by Manny! For Type 1 diabetics - we can get away with eating more of the “missed foods” then Type 2’s do - sad to say - but if you can stay off insulin - then great - stay away from the foods that may cause you to become a Type 1!!!
I guess I am what would be considered by many as a bad diabetic. I eat chocolate - just your regular semi-sweet dark chocolate (Belgium is the best). I did try the sorbitol (or some sort of artificial sweetened) one time - and that did a number on me - because of course - being sugar free - I ate it like there was no tomorrow - and spent the next few days on the throne. I mean - how lame a “I’m sick can’t come into work because I ate too much chocolate” excuse is it if you honestly told your boss why you can’t come in? This was of course after Easter - so I had a few extra days off of work - but not in a good way.
As far as other foods - I still eat them - just watch the carb count - how much I eat - therefore - I don’t miss out on anything. Moderation is the best policy (just noticing Ray said the same thing) if you can’t really resist eating those “naughty foods”. It works for me.
I miss being able to have a huge slice of birthday cake with ice cream! Now, if I partake in cake and ice cream, my blood sugar is messed up for 2 days and I feel like crap! When my blood sugar is high at night, I just toss and turn all night…and feel awful the next morning.
Dark chocolate covered almonds from Trader Joe’s are the BEST and do not do crazy things to my numbers.
i miss drinking regular pepsi
I miss pecan pie. There is no way that I can eat this. Can’t even bolus for it. No matter what, my glucose goes up and stays up for many, many hours. This is even if I get a carb count on it.
I have to second that! Manny…once you have them, you will wonder how you’ve lived so long without them.
Jamba Juice fruit smoothies! Or even homemade ones. The day I was diagnosed, my dr called to tell me to go to the ER, but I decided to eat breakfast first. Being completely clueless about diabetes, but aware of horrible hospital food, I decided to make myself something really good before I left. A homemade fruit smoothie: orange juice, banana, frozen berries and ice. I cringe now at my ignorance! lol When I got to the ER, my sugar was only 125…I thought maybe my Dr. was mistaken and incorrectly sent me there. But by the time I was back in the ER room, it was over 600! I learned that day after being diagnosed T1: no more fruit smoothies.
L W mentioned , June 21 , 2007 ; jusrt read it now …: Droste chocolates…well , folks these chocolates were made in Haarlem ,the Netherlands the place I was made too
the BEST . I would cycle by the factory regularly and the smell …wowy .
I eat pretty much whatever I want, but I do avoid a lot because I want to avoid highs, but my girlfriend makes some pretty dang good brownies every year for my husband’s birthday and I miss having a whole piece instead of a tiny bite, though my husband swears there is a brownie mouse on attack when more than a bite is missing, I think it was a low I might of had.
I always eat the real deal of everything as all those tol’s do me in and make me so sick.
i still eat chocolate, i just bolus for it of course and watch my blood sugar more carefully.
I still eat chocolates… I just dont eat as much as I use to. That is what I miss since I LOVE chocolates. I love anything with chocolates in its, LOL. Chocolate beehive, Chocolate cake with double dutch ice cream, a Sniker bar, Fudge walnut brownies, Double Chocolate rolls, Nutty chocolate dougnuts, etc. etc. I love making them…I just cant eat a lot of them…boohoohoo:(
I also miss native Filipino delicacies such as rice cakes and halo-halo,
since I got on the pump I have limited myself from popcorn, and chocolate. I rarely have either one. but every so often I will have a bite size piece of chocolate and do a combo bolus to compensate for the eventual high.
That’s funny Karen – I also feel frequent lows when there are brownies in the house. Or that’s what I tell my husband when he sees that a brownie disappeared.
He knows better than to believe me!
Actually usually I’m the one to make the brownies and there is a lot of sugar in the recipe. Always shocks me as I dump it in. That actually helps me to not want to eat it.
I figure I could eat pure chocolate and enjoy it!
Oh my I just went to the store and Halloween stuff is out…Tons of Candy…I miss it all… i have a pump and know i can compensate ,but it is still not the same… pan de dia de los muertos con chocolate mexicano caliente (day of the dead bread and hot mexican chocolate)
I hear ya. Maybe I should be missing the chocolate and the beer more.
I too get Lindt 70% cocoa or higher(Lindt now has a90%) but it is hard to stop with one square. But one or two squares I’m okay with but more would be disasterous.
Awesome chocolate fix… Kellogg’s FiberPlus bars… the Dark Chocolate Almond ones. I have a major sweet tooth (unfortuante for a diabteic) and chocolate is my favorite (WAS my favorite). These bars have very little effect on my BS and they are verrrrrry chocolatey!! YUM!
I miss pizza. Ummmmmm, and, PIZZA!!! Eating the toppings off the crust just doesnt cut it and eating the crust is not an option. Hmph!
