Fiber

So I found these Splenda packets with 1g of fiber each. I had two cups of coffee this morning and snuck in 4g of fiber without much effort really

I know I need more fiber in my life and that it is good for our blood sugar. I would like to know how the rest of you find ways to get your daily intake. I'd like some recommendations for fiber supplements, good natural sources, and maybe some warnings of...ahem...side effects.

Dino-

I did not know splenda makes their sweetner with fiber…thanks for the info.
I am with you! I am curious to know how others get their fiber

I use products with flax. I put flax meal in my oatmeal (and pancake batter on the rare occasion I make those), and I buy cold cereals made with flax. Flax is an excellent source of omega-3, which is the primary reason I use it, but it also has a good amount of fiber. There are bread products also made with flax. They tend to be lower carb than other whole grain bread products too. Besides that, just eat more fruits, legumes and veggies.

Personally, I prefer to get as much of what I need nutritionally from food rather than supplements. I think the body utilizes what it needs better that way, plus nutritionally-rich foods will have multiple benefits.

Oat bran! Not only does it lower GI, it also contains a ton of fibre. You can substitute some of the flour in recipes for it. You can add it to soups and stews too.

I use flax on my cereal. Either stone ground oatmeal or cold cereal

You could also try popcorn. 3 cups of homemade, microwave popped popcorn is equal to 15 grams of carbs.

Metamucil Dino, Metamucil. I’m old school that way! I just never seemed to be able to accumulate the correct amount throughout the day trying to get it in my meals, so I get it in one “delicious” glass every morning.

I don’t know if it’s true or not because I never looked into it, but I’ve heard that your system reaches a homeostasis if you take that regularly so you’re pretty much stuck using it because things don’t move along naturally without it once your body gets used to it.

VEGETABLES

I’m surprised nobody said this! I keep it simple.

I did!

I eat a vegan diet and get between 45-60 grams of fiber everyday. I eat lots of legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruit (8-10 servings of veggies and fruits everyday). Most of what I eat is also low calorie so there are lots of benefits. I add flax seed meal to something at least once a day.

I’m just looking for more fiber to keep the blood sugars in check. Things are moving along quite nicely as it is. Any nicer, and well, things might not be so nice.

I have also been adding to my regular vitamins I take fiber choice 2 tablets daily…

Vegetables (remember, celery is “Nature’s Broom!”), sprinkling Bran Buds on salads, or cottage cheese or mixing with other cereals, fruit (berries hve LOTS of fiber), and eating legumes, pulses, etc. in one form or another almost every day.
