Am I the only one who can’t use glucose tabs to treat a low? I’ve tried popping like 4 or 5 and they always take about 30 mins to raise my sugar and they don’t even raise it enough to make me feel normal again.
But out of the flavors I’ve tried, I love the fruit punch ones. I hate the sour apple ones they give me a stomach ache.
Around here every pharmacy has these little rolls of glucose tabs that are pretty cheap and come in just about every fruit flavor imaginable be it banana, cherry, strawberry, pineapple or even cola flavored (yuk!) and one called boysenberry (I have no idea what a boysenberry is). My favorites are cherry and green apple, they practically melt in your mouth. Has anyone ever used those tubes of glucose gel?
Found a new flavor Bob’s soft peppermints.
I have been diabetic for 17yrs and NEVER used glucose tabs. But my interest has been peaked by all the glucose tab talk in all the discussions. So I went out the other day and bought watermelon, orange, grape and raspberry. Thought let me try and see which I like. Well I had a low on Wednesday and went into my drawer at work and pulled out 3 tabs the size of a bar of soap. After the first tab, I wonder how anyone can treat their lows with these? It was chalk with an orange flavor in the background…ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I’ll try the others, but so far I’m not liking the tabs although I did like that it brought me up pretty quickly.
you don’t have the little round disks? I can’t stand the big square ones, they have no flavor to me.
I love grape and orange. I hate the watermelon (they taste like chewable tylenol!) and the english toffee
They tasted good when i was extremely low, but after that i had to secretly throw them away, a few at a time. There too sweet in my opinion, they just grossed me out. I wish they would make a kiwi-strawberry one, or a lemon-lime.
Cotton Candy would be cool. Half the time when i get low i eat skittles too. I think they should make glucose tabs that taste just like skittles.
I wonder if they could make tabs that were chewy, and work just as well. While in the process of swallowing a dissolved glucose tab, its goes down the wrong pipe nurmerious times. Then i end up coughing for several minutes straight and my sugar being low isnt the problem anymore, its wither if i can breathe or not x)
I don’t care for orange so much because they remind me of the first glucose tabs, the square BD ones that only come 6 to a box. I’ve used orange though. Grape flavored anything is just nasty, IMO. I tried watermelon, and it was OK, and I think I tried sour apple which was also OK. I don’t use glucose tabs so much though. I prefer to just buy huge bags of hard candies - peppermint, cinnamon, or spearmint - from Walgreens. Three of those are 15g crabs. It’s way cheaper, and those aren’t candies that I would be tempted to snack on. I also wish they could make the glucose tabs 5g carbs each instead of 4g.
I absolutely hate grape, but i love the watermelon and orange. and raspberry is really good too. and i think green apple is gross. Ive never heard of butterscotch though! I’ll have to try those.
I love the assorted fruit
not a big fan of the grape
never really gave that much thaught
They are round disks, but they are super duper thick. I have to look around and see if there are different sizes, try the gel too,
The only gel I like is the fruit punch. I go to our local candy store and they stock this hubba bubba gel lollipop and it works good. I also have been known to go get those little tubes of cake gel icing. I get the flourescent colors so I can have fun with turning my mouth colors and freak people out.
i still pretty much to this day hate glucose tabs as much as i ever did, but there are a few flavors i’ll buy even if they aren’t wonderful. grape is pretty much my standby flavor, not so much because it’s yummy, but because you know what you’re getting with grape. it’ll taste nothing like the actual produce, but has the same familiarity of every artificial grape product ever made. i have seen fruit punch a few time and that was the best tasting one i’ve had…like a kool-ade packet mashed into tablet form. i think they sell them at walmart.
i hate, hate, hate orange. possibly from back in the days when that’s the only flavor you could ever find. and i will not touch raspberry on the principle that i hate anything that supposed to taste like a berry but doesn’t.
i think if i were to be in charge of making the flavors i’d pick things that had more of a natural taste rather than tasting like like powdered yuck. i think honey would be a nice flavor or mabee vanilla chai. i like the idea of a more subtly sweet tast that a punch in the mouth. fruit flavors remind me a bit too much of cough syrup. they completely fail to mask how awful the product you’re using really is.
i like the idea of chewable glucose tabs. i enjoy starbusts when i’m having a low. plus i always sem to choke on the dust of glucose tabs which only makes me feel worse.
You bring up an excellent point. Why does artificial grape taste nothing like an actual grape? And furthermore, why can’t they MAKE grape candy taste like a grape?
lol i think the basic mechanics behind fruit flavored candy is that it’s a lot harder to recreate the actual fruit flavors, particulairly of very water dense fruit, versus the flavors of fruit juices. it’s easier in citrus though since they have a stronger flavor to begin with. everything that is “grape flavored” tastes more like grape juice than an actual grape and honestly with all the sugar they load the juice with it still doesn’t taste like a grape to me. mabee once i start up school i’ll start experimenting and make candies that taste like the real fruit and come up with a grape taste that actually tastes like grape. and then willy wonka will hire me to head up the sugar free candy division and i’ll invite you all to come visit…just don’t try the gum yet…
Hmm. Like others have said, I have not had a glucose tablet since the orange bd ones. That was over ten years ago. Maybe it’s time to try them again. Is there a reason to use them over candy? Do they work faster or better? Do they make ham flavored ones? LOL
South African glucose tabs, and they’re a lovely treat:
Does that say “the energy sweet”?
How appropriate!
Yes, it does. The ad jingle goes “Super C for energy!”.
I had my first glucose tablet yesterday… I hit 63 …It was the sour apple … not bad!!!
