Hi, my name is Jen, and I have identical twin boys, aged 5. Logan was DX in July with type 1, and we are struggling to hang on… but now I find myself worried about Gray.
Are there any twins on here with information about the incidence of both twins having the D?
Identical or otherwise?
I am trying not to live in fear, but I figure the best way to arm myself is with information.

I’m an identical twin and my sister got type 1 at age eight. I followed suit at age eleven.
There is a 50% chance that the other identical twin will not get diabetes (or will).
It’s hard to be a mother of twins, I know (my mom won’t let me forget) and I also know how hard it must be to be the mother of a type one.
I was dx’d in the 1980’s (my sis in 1985 and me in 1989) and none of the docs ever mentioned the possibility that I’d get it so we weren’t really prepared. I would not alarm the other twin, but it couldn’t hurt to check his bloodsugar if he starts to exhibit signs that seem scarily familiar.

I have twin sons, now age 30. One has been T1 since age 14 and went on to develop additional endocrine conditions… adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroid, and hpyerkalemia. His twin brother is still free of diabetes, but has developed the other three encodrine conditions his brother has. Most like the diabetes will come at some time, but it has been 16 years already that he has been free of it. He takes excellent care of himself, gets a lot of exercise, eats well… I think statistics are a guideline, but I do not believe inevitable. God bless you.
I am an identical twin. I was dx at age of 6 in 1973. Now at 43, twin does NOT have diabetes or any symptoms thereof. She had two preganancies and did not even get Gestational Diabetes. Treat each of your kids as their own person and please from someone who knows please don’t refer to them as “My Twins” or “The Twins”. They lose all sense of individuality. My sister did look out for me a little in elementary school, but once we got to about 4th grade, I knew enough to handle things on my own.
I’m the only one in my family to have diabetes.
By the way, guess which one I am ??? 
I am a identical twin, and when i was just getting diagnosed they thought she had it and 2 days later they did the test on me and i had it.
i have had diabetes for 7 years now and so far my twin sister doesn’t have it. my mom got her tested when i was first diagnosed and she had a 67 percent chance of getting it but it’s been 7 years…
she checks her blood sugar all the time and her blood is always perfect.

I see that your post is from a couple of years ago but I still want to answer. I have identical twin girls, the younger twin was dx July 2010 at age 5 and 2 months later we took a random bg test on the older twin and it was 388. She was dx just 60 days after her twin. We were told there was only a 50% chance. I pray your other son does not develop Type 1, but if he does, at least they can battle it together!.

Hi I'm an identical twin and my sister is fit an healthy and has no health issues so try not to live with to much fear of this disease affecting both of them. I have had it for 10 years and my sister has no sign of it. hope this helps you feel a bit better about it.
