Today, November 14th is Frederick Banting’s 125th birthday. We owe him a debt of gratitude. Let’s all raise a glass of diet soda to him today.
Amen to that!
The part of this history that impresses me most is that Banting and two of his colleagues sold the patent for insulin to the University of Toronto for $3 Canadian. That altruism amazes me in the light of what the modern insulin producers have done to the cost of insulin.
I always have this slightly mixed reaction about International Diabetes Day because of the coincidence of dates, but then I remind myself that if it hadn’t been for this guy I would have stopped having birthdays after 1983, so I can’t exactly begrudge him sharing mine. I’ll be lifting a glass to us both.
And I’ll be lifting a glass to all three of you, plus every PWD in the world!
For me, I probably would have checked-out in 1984 at the age of 30 or 31. I have now lived over half my life directly because of the discovery of insulin.
Even though I do not (yet) have diabetes, I credit Frederick Banting with saving both my daughter’s life and my own. Because I have no doubt that if my daughter had died, I would have taken my own life.
I’ve lived nearly 3/4ths of my life with insulin. Without it, I likely wouldn’t have seen my pre-teens, and definitely wouldn’t have lived to be an adult. I’m thankful every day not only for insulin but also for living somewhere where I have access to it.
Happy Birthday! So glad you have been able to hang with us … and we with you … because of that Banting guy …
yay for banting and best! happy birthday, fred!
sometimes when im shooting up for something exceptionally good, like ice-cream, i will think about how much i love insulin. i also do this when im really high. but i feel sooo thankful when its for cake orsomething.
I don’t even want to think about what life would be like without insulin. Very short I imagine.
