Kashi Go Lean Cereals - Cause Unexplained Highs

Has anyone else consuming this cereal have unexplained highs?

I have been eating one half cup of this cereal the past couple of mornings and have had unexplained highs thereafter. The nutritional data indicates the 1/2 cup I am eating should be 15 g of carbs. I am eating this with 1/2 cup of almond silk milk (1 gram of carb).

For me, ALL cereals cause unexplained highs. I have tried every “healthy” cereal there is, and I have always gone high despite bolusing for them correctly. I came to the conclusion that cereal, like rice, just doesn’t work for me and I no longer eat it. Sigh.

cold crereals do the samething to me. I get bad results with oatmeal too.

Oh yeah, I should specify that I meant cold cereals. I’ve never eaten hot cereal and think it’s gross…lol. But I have heard some people have had good experience with oatmeal and it doesn’t seem like gruel to others!

You might try adding some protein or fats in your breakfast and see if that slows down the carb absorption. Maybe even just some milk (not sure if there are any fats at all in soy milk). Idea is not to focus so much on carbs but to get a more well-rounded breakfast.

I think I may have to do with the cane sugar. Looking at the list of ingredients, it is pretty near the top. I used to love the Go Lean Crunch, even sweeter. I think of it as candy even though it has a lot of fiber.

I don’t remember the names of the cereals I tried now (there were lots of them), but even cereals without sugar or with sugar down further on the ingredient lost spike me. YMMV.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that the cause was only the sugar. I just remember thinking that for a “healthy cereal” it had an awful lot of sugar.

Oh, I agree! When I first stopped eating sugar, years before my diabetes diagnosis, I was amazed at how many things you wouldn’t think had sugar, had lots of it, including many so-called “healthy” foods. I was sad when the only fruit yogurt I’d ever found that didn’t have added sugar, Continental brand went out of business. And that stuff was good…especially the cappuchino flavor!

I’ve had to give up cold cereals completely, bolusing for carbs and milk plus a little extra, the last two times I ate some I was 200+ 2 hours later, so the last time ended cereal for me.

All grains convert to sugar immediately (yep, even those “whole grains”. I suggest watching this 4 minute video of Dr. Richard Bernstein - just listen to him - the woman is completely incorrect! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PZno7Nkuuw

Cereal sends me soaring so I don’t eat it. Grains in this form start digesting as soon as they hit saliva. Lactose in milk has the same effect, so I use unsweetened almond milk also.
