I was diagnosed in sept 09 with type 2 diabetes by family docter and changed my diet but now iam under weight and still losing weight any suggestions i cant seem to get any help from my docter and he will not send me to a specialist
Hi Jen,
How are your numbers? High blood sugar can cause weight loss. I noticed you’re not on any meds.
Can you change doctors to one who’s more supportive? Many people are misdiagnosed Type 2 (& often for years) based on age when they’re LADA or Type 1. A proper diagnosis is only possible with the right tests. Doctors often jump to conclusions if a patient isn’t a child & assume Type 2. It’s critical to get the right diagnosis for treatment & for insurance purposes.
Hello Jen! Gerri is right… will it be possible for you to get a specialist ? like an endocrinologist? How are your blood glucose numbers so far? Maybe you can start with a more accurate diagnosis…then a more appropriate diabetes management can be recommended.
Rapid weight loss is a sign that your body is not using the carbs you are eating. You may have been misdiagnosed. Ask your doctor to rund GAD antibody tests and a C-Peptide Insulin Test to see what your levels are.
Me too re losing weight like crazy, I ignored my symptoms for a long time and kept getting skinnier .I am athletic of build to begin with and always was about 170lbs … well now i am about 145 and look like a starving carcass. The Doc told me with diabetes i am basically starving to death as i can not process food…basically the energy can not enter my cells. The good news is that when my BG is corrected so will the weight loss issue. I know exercise is critical and muscle = weight.I have leveled off and hopefully gaining slowly now since being on meds.
Thankyou for the information Iam currently looking for a new docter and trying to get all the information I can get!!!
If you’re not getting help from your doctor, he & his office isn’t able to provide help. You should be able to go to a specialist without being referred to one by him. Your insurance should allow you to. By specialist I mean an endocrinologist, not just an internist.
Are you testing? Testing dates, times, & results am and post meals, especially one and two hour, should be taken to the specialist when you go. It would be helpful to his CDE to know what you’ve eaten to result in the results. Glad you’re looking for another doctor. I second everything else everyone else has said.
